    On what device?

Not all devices are capable of running MIDlets in the background.

Re: want to run my midlet in background!

Actually i am developing this software for my employer.
    So it doesn't matter.
i can test my app on nokia n95, E71 etc.
Please tell me how can i do that.
When i receive a sms from a cell number then my midlet reply some text .
Running in background is very necessary.
I searched some data and it says that you can do that using PUSH REGISTRY.
    Thanks for your time!

Yes, you don't need to run in the background. Using the push registry, your application can be started automatically when an SMS arrive at a specific port. (You cannot receive general text messages.)

Take a look at the wiki: Using PushRegistry in Java ME.

    Cheers,
    Graham.

Thumbs up Re: want to run my midlet in background!

    Hi,
just dont display anything and use pushregistry to invoke the application. Link provided by graham is quite useful. Can search for more on web.
    thanks,

Re: want to run my midlet in background!

    thanks for your kindness Graham,
    one more question

i didn't check receiving sms code on my phone yet.

To check the functionality of receiving sms. i need one mobile phone or two.
I am asking this because i read somewhere today that , you can only receive sms from those sender which are sending on that particular port on which you are listening.
So that's mean i need to install my sender application on different phone and my receiving app on different phone, doesn't look logical.
But i don't have mobile phone now.
just wondering ,what will be the way of testing for this listening sms funtionality.?

You should be able to simulate this by running both sender and receiver in two separate emulator-sessions. I've never done this, so I can't offer much help. Check the documentation for the Wireless Toolkit. There is also a tool for monitoring the messages between emulators, I think.

    Cheers,
    Graham.

PushRegistry takes care of that. You register your app for a specific sms port. When a message arrives on that port, the application manager starts your application automatically.

Everybody is talking about receiving SMS. But the thing is, you cannot reply back without user confirmation for every reply. If you want everything to be automatic then you should go with Symbian C++ rather than J2ME.

Hi, on S60 u can run app in background by Setting display.setCurrent(null). well this is aplicable to all devices those support running of app in background. Won't work on S40. Use SmsListener or PushRegistry to listen for incomming sms.
    au revoir

yeh, i will definitely do that using push registry but the point raises here is ,when my app try to send reply it would need the permission of user which shouldn't be.

    Pre-Requisites:

To use this application and service, user should have a cell phone with:

    1. Symbian OS S60 3rd Edition.

So you need Symbian... Why ? because it's a C+++ app not a J2ME app...

A simple way to tell that it is an Symbian application... If you see logo as Jigsaw Puzzle element with a red cube over it then it is Symbian and if it is blue cube then it is J2ME. Check that link and you will realize in 2 seconds that it is Symbian.
