    Smile Qt Mobility project announced

    Hi all,
In February we published the first versions of Mobile Extensions for Qt for S60 (http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Mobile_Extensions) that provide the capability to extend your Qt applications to utilize mobile features on S60 devices.

We've gotten great feedback from our developers and now we're happy to announce that the first set of these APIs are being evolved for cross-platform use, not just S60. The API interfaces and use cases of mobile extensions have been refined based on the valuable feedback we've gotten. The project is called the Mobility project (http://labs.trolltech.com/page/Projects/QtMobility) and the work is starting with Bearer Management API and Contacts API.

In addition there will be other enablers for Qt developers that can be used on mobile devices like the announced Service Framework (http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2009...ice-framework/). In the longer run we're aiming to get more cross-platform solutions from the mobile extensions. It is recommended to always use the cross-platform Qt APIs when available.

The mobile extensions continue to evolve, for the next release we will have major improvements on how the extensions are taken into use and we will also be opening up new features for Qt developers!

    Cheers,
    Jack

    Hi,

I went through the Qt mobility site. It is surprising that s40 is mentioned. Will Qt be ported
to s40 platform ? Any info on that ?

    Regards,

    Re: Qt Mobility project announced

    Hi Jaak,
agree that when quickly reading one could come to the conclusion that this indicates that Qt will be ported to Series 40:

"Currently, if they wish to target Nokia Platforms they need to build specifically for S40, Maemo or S60. Our new suite of Qt APIs will enable them to write and maintain one application, which will run across all supported Qt platforms. "

What is actually stated is that "will run across all supported Qt platforms". Series 40 is not a supported Qt platform nor have any announcements been made that it would be.

    Hi,

So it is marketing stuff I suppose. This is not the first time I'am seeing s40 mentioned in Qt related docs.
Qt everywhere. Well, only on symbian, maemo and WinMobile. With Qt mobility, there may be devices other than
phones that support Qt. Thanks for the reply.

    Re: Qt Mobility project announced

This Qt for S40 issue is likely to go one of two ways. Either Qt will be supported on S40, or S40 will be phased out before that happens (i.e. if Nokia can't leverage their cross-platform effort on S40 then it will not make sense to use S40 much any more, probably only for the very low end devices where price is really the only thing that matters). I think the former is much more likely than the latter. Then the question will be whether or not Qt is open to 3rd party developers on S40 (there are issues with opening a native runtime on a simple RTOS).

At NDS in Monaco, Mika Rytkonen was asked this question about Qt on S40, he said a feasibility study was in progress and the results were looking pretty good so far. That's about as much encouragement/info as you can get for now.
