Getting location cordinates using cell id or wifi

    Hi,
Is it possible to get the location information (Latitude / Longitude) using cell - id or wi-fi?

I don’t have any tie up with network provided or i don’t want to use any third party web service to determine the location coordinates.

Can I calculate the latitude and longitude using cell - id / wifi locally on device?

    Targeted device is: NOKIA E61i

    Best Regards,

Alternatively, you can use external bluetooth GPS and fetch latitude/longitude from it.

Thumbs up Re: Getting location cordinates using cell id or wifi

    Hi Dipak,

Once you get the CellID you can map it to Latitude and longitude.
for this you need a database of this mapping.
There are many people working towards it, and i have seen working example of this.

Alternatively there is triangulation method by which you can determine Location of target device.

in wifi also you can get this info but your wifi router should support triangulation method and location services.
Most of the current wifi router does not support it.

I have developed a working example of cellid to location.
    you can try this surely.

    Hi Dipak,

I am afraid you have to use a third party service to get the coordinates. You have several cell id look-up services out there which can help you to get latitude and longitude based on cellid.

    Here is a list:

    1. www.opencellid.org
    2. www.location-api.com
    3. www.skyhookwireless.com
    4. www.navizon.com

    Best Regards
