Extend WRT Widget Features with ApiBridge

Forum Nokia recently released ApiBridge, a tool that extends the features of Web Runtime (WRT) widgets by using capabilities of Symbian OS. ApiBridge can be used to access Symbian OS capabilities from WRT widgets on the Symbian OS, S60 5.0, Symbian OS, S60 3.2, and Symbian OS, S60 3.1 platforms. These capabilities include:

    • Uploading files
    • Capturing video, image, and audio
    • Reading files
    • Resizing images
    • Creating image thumbnails
    • Using the logging service
    • Operating the location service
    • Utilizing the media management service

You can learn more about the ApiBridge in its wiki page.

This Thread can be used for discussion about this topic.

Is is possible to use unsigned .sis files as widget applications for testing purpose or limited distribution?

I would assume so but sometimes good to clarify. The wiki only mentions signed .sis.

also is it possible for a Symbian C++ developer to create a custom ECOM plug-in and distributed as a .sis widget?

    @hp3

    - It's not possible to have embedded SIS files in an unsigned SIS therefore your distribution SIS would need to be signed. For testing you could always distribute the ApiBride SIS file and the widget file separately.

    - It is possible for developers to create their own plug-ins. We're currently working on documentation, examples and a Emulator build of the ApiBridge. Stay tuned for an update in the next few weeks.

Re: Extend WRT Widget Features with ApiBridge

regarding testing, when testing a normal WRT in the simulator, I can copy and paste HTNL, js, css and other application assets into the widget folder of the simulator.

Does this also apply to WRT using Apibridge? Or does the use of .sis to install this type of widget change where it is installed and how accessible files are from the simulator?

Is there any more information on when the ECOM interface will be ready?

    I didn't find a way to retrieve
    - speed dials
    - associated image
    for contacts.

Will this be supported or do I have to write an ECOM plugin ?

Exclamation Re: Extend WRT Widget Features with ApiBridge

I'm trying to build a apibridge enable widget, but I'm receiving the following message:

Creation Time Description Resource Path Location Type
1261168260670 Specified file '\Symbian\9.2\S60_3rd_FP1\EPOC32\RELEASE\WINSCW\UDEB\SWInstCli.lib' not found PTInstaller Unknown C/C++ Problem

But I found that the file is located in the following directory: Symbian\9.2\S60_3rd_FP1\Epoc32\release\armv5\lib

So, my question is can I build an apibridge project to test in the emulator? or when I import the bld.inf file which platform do I have to select?

    Thanks in advanced,

Re: Extend WRT Widget Features with ApiBridge

Looking at apibridge documentation, I see the newfileservice, but the only types listed are audio, video and image. Can we use apibridge somehow to create a or rewrite a new local file with xml, or csv, or JSON contents?

    This would be most useful

The new APIBridge package which contains the Plug-in creation package has now been released.

    Get it from here.

We now also have a landing page:

Re: Extend WRT Widget Features with ApiBridge

    Hi,
is it possible to install the ApiBridge on other devices as such from Nokia e.g. Samsung?

My Problem is, that my Application now only runs on Nokia devices because important functions depend on the Apibridge

    thx

Re: Extend WRT Widget Features with ApiBridge

    Hi augulus,

API Bridge is compatible with devices based on Symbian OS, and more specifically: Symbian OS S60 5.0, Symbian OS S60 3.2, and Symbian OS S60 3.1 platforms. If devices from other vendors are based on the sample platforms, there's a chance that API Bridge, and so your application, could work on these. Anyway, only testing (and support from the manufacturer) can give you exact responses.

Re: Extend WRT Widget Features with ApiBridge

    Hi Pit,
the problem is that i can't install the signed application (wgz + apibridge).

    http://developer.symbian.org/forum/s...ead.php?t=6278
    ---
i've tried to sign (Open Signed Online) my SIS (includes .wgz and apibridge.sis) for my Samsung i8910 HD.
But whenever i try to install it, i get an certificate error.
Signing an installing the same SIS for my nokia devices is no problem.

    Hi augulus,

the reply on your other thread explains pretty well why you have such behavior and, apart from asking Nokia to allow to use API Bridge on devices other than Nokia, I don't see other options..
