I don't know if your ensymble version is totally different from mine, which was shipped with 1.9.7, but I was using this switch as

    --icon=app.svg

    and it works for me.

If your icon is transparent or blank in the phone menu, you may have a problem with your svg image. Full svg are not supported, you need to apply some restrictions (tiny svg supported). And do not forget that your phone can cache menu images so it is better to reboot it to ensure that your image will be reloaded.

I think png to svg conversion only works when the image is rastered. Embedded images in svg do not work as menu icons. Gradients will not work as well. Inkscape does not support (yet) svg tiny and you need to convert it to svg tiny. People say that Illustrator works fine but I never tried.

Yes, I agree: this stuff is boring !

Fix them or use try/except statements around the problems. Otherwise you will have errors on your screen.

Actually gradients do work if they are properly structured.
SVG Pony can usually convert the Inkscape svg to usable SVG Tiny format. It also provides a preview feature on your phone if you have wifi.

No, they don't need to be rastered, at least linear and radial gradients work fine as such. They just can't be nested.
3rd Edition and 5th Edition phones have a different level of support though.
