    hello BernhardA

I have less experience in developing apps for Maemo, but you can try searching the APIs in the new Qt mobility project, i guess they have a sensor API, but i am not sure if it is there for maemo 5 or not.

    Read file /sys/devices/platform/gpio-switch/proximity/state

It gives you 2 possible states: open and closed

Similarly /sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-3/3-001d/coord gives you accelerometer data, e.g.
    -18 -54 -1008

Talk.maemo.org might give you better and more accurate answers and faster.
