HTTP Messages - Push or Poll?

    Hi,

I'm building a Symbian application which receives notifications from a web server.
What is the best way, regarding battery & GPRS data usage, to check for new messages?

    1) Polling - connecting to the server every 1-2 minutes to check for new messages.

    2) Pushing - connect to the server once, leave connection open at all time, send "alive" messages every 15-30 minutes and get new messages instantly from server.

    Thanks.

HTTP is query-response, where the data-connection is actually not kept alive between queries, so you could maybe try just basic TCP/IP connection, if you want to keep it alive all times. Anyway, haven't seen any comparison on the battery consumption, so maybe you could make simple apps and test yourself which would work better.

I need to use http since usually the cell providers blocks all other data.

I guess I'll just have to test it myself.
    Thanks.

Re: HTTP Messages - Push or Poll?

There is no push registry for Symbian C++, but it is possible to automatically start applications when the device boots, then those applications can watch for incoming SMS-s, or anything else.
It is called Startup List Management API, you can find it in the SDK documentation, and also described here: http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu...Management_API
Since the documentation is somehow less useful, check #35 and #39 of http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu...ation-Signing! to see how it is actually done.
