    common bit rates?

what are the common bit rates for browsing internet from a phone? are these also applicable to messaging or is that an entirely different networking mechanism.

    Hello!

The basic circuit switched data for GSM is 9,6 kbit/s. With High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) bit rate can be up to 57,6 kbit/s. GPRS bit rates can vary e.g. 20 - 50 kbit/s. For example Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is using GPRS as bearer.

The provided bit rates vary depending on the operator so please contact your own operator for exact information.

    Kind regards,

so the basic bitrate is 9.6kbps

if you have a phone with HSCSD then bit rate can be as high as 57.6kbps

I assume that HSCSD is a extra hardware feature that not all phones have.

What percentage of users support these various bitrates?

is GPRS another form of network switching or is it a circuit built into the phone?

    Hi,

you can check from document Nokia GSM WAP Phone Characteristics which connection type features different Nokia phones support.

GPRS is General Packet Radio Service, it's packet-based data services.

All the phones doesn't have the HSCSD functionality, if your would like to use HSCSD also the network provider must support functionality.
