    Tool to make SVG from raster images

    I have written a small utility allows to embed a raster image into SVG container which can be used by the Symbian S60 SDK (I use it to make application icons from raster images), as well the utility can automatically generate a mask from the image. The utility is written in Java 1.6 and can be used either via command string or as UI application. It can be downloaded via the link http://igormaznitsa.com/Download/img2svg100.zip

    Sorry but I do have to advice against using this tool. There is a big difference between vectorial and raster images and all this tool does is disguise a raster image in a SVG wrapper. On Symbian/S60 we strongly encourage developers to use vectorial graphics. If for one reason or another SVGs cannot be provided then we also support raster formats (mbm encoded) so there's really no need to employ fake SVGs.

    Of course you are right and I would say the same too.. but there are cases when you have only raster image from a customer or its vector logo can't be normally converted into tinySVG (I had the case) and you spent a lot of hours to correct it and without any result, so I had written the utility and it really helped me in my cases :) of course I know that vector format is really better than raster format but it is no so easy to make 100% compatible vector image to be look right on S60 :) I hope that in future Nokia will support right full SVG format and my utility will not be needed :)

    p.s.
    of course if it is possible to use a pure raster format instead of such SVG (containing raster) then better use the pure raster but as I wrote before there are a lot of different use cases and it is good to have utilities for all them :)

    Sorry, but I do fail to see the cases where the tool would be useful. One has the choice of using SVG (SVGT) graphics or raster ones. If it is raster that you have, then use raster. But convert them to MBM rather than SVG and then MIF. There are devices in which this kind of fake SVGs are known to cause serious problems. Granted, they are due to bugs in phone's SVG rendering engine but they are easily to avoid by keeping raster and vectorial graphics separated.

    Re: Tool to make SVG from raster images

    Hi Igor,
    as a declared SVG hater myself, I have found a way to make an app icon without SVG at all:

    Re: Tool to make SVG from raster images

    I have followed the above link clearly. I made / built a project called "Image" on carbide. I went to .mmp and include Image_icon.mbm and uploaded a bitmap image.

    I have added the the info as said in .pkg like " "$(EPOCROOT)epoc32datazresourceappsImage_icon.mbm" -"!:resourceappsImage_icon.mbm".

    I want only 1 i.e single application icon.

    Added the same in .rss as

    RESOURCE LOCALISABLE_APP_INFO r_localisable_app_info
    {
    short_caption = STR_ImageApplication_5;
    caption_and_icon = CAPTION_AND_ICON_INFO
    {
    caption = STR_ImageApplication_4;
    number_of_icons = 1;
    };
    }

    Nopw tell me whee Iam wrong why still the Default icon is only visble insted of my bitmap icon uploaded.

    Re: Tool to make SVG from raster images

    Shall I change here to qgn_menu_Image.mbm etc

    RESOURCE : $(ICONTARGETFILENAME)

    $(ICONTARGETFILENAME) : $(ICONDIR)\qgn_menu_Image.svg
    mifconv $(ICONTARGETFILENAME) \
    /H$(HEADERFILENAME) \
    /c32,8 $(ICONDIR)\qgn_menu_Image.svg
