How to connect to MySQL database and populate dropdownlist?

I'm new to the whole WRT development thing so I'm just trying to get a grasp of the basics for now. Most of my webdev in the past has been in asp.net. All I'm trying to do now is populate an html dropdown list in the wrt app with a Select all from table statement to a MySQL database. Could anyone clarify this process?
I'm new to javascript and ajax but from what I can gather I should get an aspx file to run the query and somehow output it to json, then get js to get that data using ajax and populate the dropdown list.

    Hello Richard,

It has been a while since I last used asp.NET so I cannot help with details, but it should work like this:
Setup a new Web service project.
Create a web service which returns the data from database in JSON format. asp.NET has quite nice JSON serialization support.
    Deploy your script to server

Create a widget project. The widget fetches the data from the server.
When making the xhtmlrequest set the content type as: "application/json; charset=utf-8"
Generate the dropdown list with the fetched items.

This tutorial seems to cover the use case quite nicely, although it uses additional jQuery library to handle the JS side.
