I try the SDK just to compare eSWT and a recent version of LWUIT... LWUIT is probably the best for the portability, for the functionnality... But it is slow, even on an N8... For LWUIT, you have to find or create a decent theme too... So for me, eSWT is better....

I'm only working on native implementations/ports at the moment (also for Android, actually), and see no need to begin any J2ME base projects/versions. Main reason is existing native C/C++ assets (code), where a Java version isn't worth the trouble (no business case for us with limited resources/budget). The next non-native platform I'll target will most likely be Windows Phone.

J2ME isn't dead yet, but it isn't supported on Android, iPhone or Windows Phone, and those are the only phone (smartphone) platforms of any interest to me right now (no interest in Symbian, even less for maemo/MeeGo, and none at all for targeting Series 40 at the moment).

    Hello,

no one is interested in it?
    Yes we are.

You can find more interested people on Nokia Developer Discussion Boards and especially on it's sub-forums for Java ME related discussions here: http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu...?3-Mobile-Java

Re: Java support on future Nokia devices

    Hi r2j7,

I am obviously interested by J2ME...

But is seems that J2ME on S60 had no future...

J2ME is not dead on S40... OK.

But I write again my question... What is the ui for S40 ? Is LCDUI ? Do you think that LCDUI is a good solution to create J2ME software to S40 ? Is Nokia UI API the default UI for S40 ? What is it possible with Nokia UI API ? Is better than LCDUI ?

Can we expect that eSWT will be available for S40 ? Or perhaps LWUIT is the best choise (despite it is slow) ?

I hope you answer to my questions... I will be pleased to have another thing that a link. Give me your opinion please.

    Thanks

    Hello frasene,

    thank you for your comments.

Unfortunately I cannot comment about the topics which you defined from Nokia's point of view due to the lack of public roadmap to back my comments.

However and as you suggested, there are different 3rd party UI solutions which could be of use in the application development for Series 40: http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu..._UI_Frameworks

In addition, you might want to consider submitting your improvement suggestions by using this channel for submitting feature requests: http://www.developer.nokia.com/bugs/...ture%20Request

Re: Java support on future Nokia devices

    Okay...

    Thanks for the links...

I just see the list of UI but :

    - some goods products are commercial (Polish...) when you want to sell your software;

    - except LWUIT, I think there is no information on the fact that these libraries "opensource" are stable or not; or can manage important software (with many screens).

I think that no developer want to take the risk to learn one of these frameworks, develop the software and have bugs unsolvable at the end...

When you use Metro, IOS or Android you have not those type of doubts.

For me, the lack of an reference ui stable, performant with a lot of widget for S40 is a great problem.

So what is the recommendations of NOKIA : LCDUI or Nokia UI API ?

    Thanks

I could be wrong, but somehow I recall that the Nokia UI API has been deprecated years ago by Nokia.

Thanks, I was not sure for Nokia UI API... So LCDUI is the UI for S40... Good luck...

Perhaps Java FX 2 in the feature ?

I could be wrong on this, too, but I suspect that Nokia will not spend any money in getting JavaFX (any version) to be supported on their phones.

You are partially right on this, and I quote the Java Developer's Library (JDL) on Nokia UI API:

"MIDP 2.0 introduced some features, which before existed only in Nokia UI API. Hence, MIDP APIs should be used instead of Nokia UI APIs if a corresponding feature is available."

However otherwise the Nokia UI API is still used for delivering Nokia specific Java ME features for Series 40 and Symbian devices as described on the JDL:

    Java Developer's Library 3.11 > Javadocs > Nokia UI API 1.4

    http://library.developer.nokia.com/i...w-summary.html
