    Escaping character strings?

Kind of a silly question in a way, but I haven't found an obvious built-in function for this and it seems like there should be one:

How do you go about "escaping" a character string to convert it into "quoted" form, and how do you convert a quoted string (when, eg, reading program source) into internal form?

I realize one could probably use read/write operations to a character buffer, but that seems like a rather indirect route to take.

[Actually, I guess the i/o approach doesn't work, does it?]
