    Smile SDL on symbian

    Hi all,

i' ve found an adaptation of SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) library for SymbianOS on this link http://koti.mbnet.fi/mertama/sdl.html
This library should permit to access the video frame buffer at a low layer.
I would to use this library to extract frames from a video file (in 3gp and in mp4 format).
Does anybody can help me on this task?

    Best regards

I don't think it is a working way on doing this, so why don't you try what was suggested to you in earlier threads.

    Re: SDL on symbian

    Hi symbianyucca,

the only suggest that i' ve received is to use the MDFDevVideo API but i can't find any documentation how to use it and then the compatibility of the devices with this API can be also an issue.
Do you know where i can find some examples or documentation to understand the API usage?
The only example that i can find is the DevvideoEx one but if i'm not in wrong this example is regarding the encoder and not the decoder and i'm interested in a decoding example.

    Best regards

MDFDevVideo is API plug-in API, it is not normal API so there are limited information available for it, wiki basically has all that is available. Anyway, I'm supposing still that it is the only API that can actually help you, so if you want to save time, just try it out.

    Thank's for the reply symbianyucca,

do you know the CVideoPlayerUtility class of the MMF?
I'm reading that this class implements the getFrameL() method that maybe can be used to extract frames from a video file.
But i'm new to Symbian so i don't know how to use it.
Do you know if some example is available for this?

    Regards

It is doubtful that you would get a ready-made solution for this particular task. You will have to experiment, read whatever you have (regardless of missing documentation and examples, you always have the header files, the recorder example may still turn out to be useful for configuring the decoder, you can check the open source Symbian code, it has a lots of test code for various API-s, etc.)

    Re: SDL on symbian

    Hi all,

i' m triyng to understand how to use the CVideoPlayerUtility class of the MMF.
I'm interested in its getFrameL() method that can extract the current frame from a played video.
My question is :how can i use this method if it returns a void?
My scope is to extract a frame from a video and save it in the device's filesystem but, if the getFrameL() function returns a void, how can i use this frame?

    Best regards

    Re: SDL on symbian

AFAIK the getFrameL in CVideoPlayerUtility is not implemented, thus it does not work. I'm almost sure that it has also been documented somewhere, at least it has been discussed previously.

    Re: SDL on symbian

Yes, searching for GetFrameL in the Wiki provides a rather focused range of hits.
Otherwise your question is answered in the SDK Help actually.
The suggestion of checking header files is still true, but whenever other documentation is also available, you should check it too.
