Video (progressive streaming and from file) on Nokia 7230

    Hi all,

Testing on the Nokia 7230 (S40 6th edition), I didn't succeed in watching video in Java (either
from a local file or through progressive streaming).
I get a sizeChanged and volumeChanged event, but the screen just stays black.
On top of that, I have to force exit the Java application.

Has anyone succeeded in watching video from the Java player or has anyone had
similar issues with this device? On other S40 6th edition devices, this has worked (e.g. 6700c).

The code runs fine on many other phones (S40 5th edition, Sony Ericssons, ...), so I'm thinking
this must be either codec related or (firmware)bug related.
I must try other video formats though, but the native player can play those files.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello thijsman86,

could you provide the firmware version information (which can be retrieved by entering *#0000# in phone call screen) and the video file format which your Java application uses?

    Regards,

    Hi,

    Firmware version output:
    Nokia 7230
    V 05.71
    RM-604
    (c) Nokia
    Variant: 255.02
    Virtual Variant:
    No virtual variant

    --------------------
    Used video format is
    h264; bitrate 160; width: 240; height: 176; fps: 12; audio: aac

I do have to check other video formats.
I already looked up if there is a software update available, but couldn't find any.

    Hello thijsman86,

thank you for the version info.

By using the version in question, I tested this on Nokia 7230 by using 3GPP and MP4 video formats as local files. No problems with those.

    Thanks for the info.

This test took place in Java or with the native player?
Because I forgot to mention, the native player does play the files which don't play in Java.

I tested by using a Java application which MMAPI player played the files locally. Also tried to change the screen size from full screen to your metrics but no problems with them either.

I also succeeded in playing the files locally, but playing the files progressive (playback while still retrieving the video) doesn't work.
As said, this should work considering on other S40 6th editions devices this isn't a problem.

    Hello thijsman86,

just a clarification on my side on this issue, you said:
I get a sizeChanged and volumeChanged event, but the screen just stays black.
Does this mean that the device cannot play the file at all, or that it must buffer the file fully before it starts to play it?

I tested a file which could be read into the heap memory fully, and the player effectively buffers the file completely before it starts
playing. So I think we can assume this phone doesn't support progressive playback.
A bit strange, because as of S40 5th FP1, I tought this was supported.

    Thanks for your help!

Yeah, AFAIK progressive playback SHOULD be supported on Nokia 7230 also. Need to check this.

Re: Video (progressive streaming and from file) on Nokia 7230

Can't seem to find it in your posts (but I only skimmed through them), but you do know you have to set
    progressive_download: enabled
in the JAD file for a S40 (from Series 40 3rd edition FP 2) device to get that progressive download working ?
I got it working once, but unfortunately most S40 devices don't have 3G onboard, which means that only low bitrates can be actually streamed, resulting in a somwhat poor user experience regarding quality...

@Tiger79: yes, I tested with and without that jad property.

@r2j7: are you checking this with the Nokia people or what did you mean?

    Hello thijsman86,

@r2j7: are you checking this with the Nokia people or what did you mean?
I built an example MIDlet to test this: The MIDlet downloads a 3GPP video file from server to the device. Based on the testing, the video gets downloaded and shown correctly on the referred device, Nokia 7230.

Since you have clearly established the issue on your side, I'd like to check couple of things:

-do you use files which are suitable for progressive download? (i.e. are those files which you use for Nokia 7230 the very same files which can be succesfully downloaded progressively to other Series 40 6th Edition devices?)

-could you possibly provide example application (including src codes + video files) to Nokia for reproducing this specific issue?

Re: Video (progressive streaming and from file) on Nokia 7230

    Apologies for the late reply.

The files we use have the same configuration (codec, resolution, bitrate, ...) as tested on other
S40 6th Ed. devices. We tested other types of video also (mpeg4, different resolution) of which none worked either.

Providing example code will be a bit difficult, as both client and server (sending of video) are needed.
