This is good basic functionality, but ideally I would like to show a preview of the file while browsing, like the built in gallery application, where you can choose next, back and select the file.

For this you have to read the files according to the type of the file I mean the extension and if this is same as per the image/pics extension. Then you have to make a Container or you can say that the displayable (canvas) on which you will render all the images as in the grid or desired look and feel. The most important thing is the preview and then the selection of the images using the select command/soft keys.
In order to make this kind of GUI you have to zoom in and out the image and if the user select the current selected image then you have to display the big image. This is also called as working on the thumbnails.

I hope that the above lines make some sense to you.
This and This is also a good exercise.
    Thanks with Regards,

Thanks for the excellent, informative reply! This development environment is so capable and under utilised in my opinion. I will probably proceed without this functionality in my app for now and attempt it this more elegent way when I have some more time to learn.

On lot of implemenations, which support such preview in Gallery.... they use thumbnail's cached in a file called Thumbs.db and for those platforms you just need to read thu the thumbs.db in each folder and render it on the grid View UI screen treating it as a data model.
    Thanks,

Just had a thought, for my purpose it would always be the last photo taken. Maybe I can just find that somehow.

Using JSR 75 - FCA API's you can get a list of all files in the photo gallary of the device, sort them on lastModified() timestamp (whcih you can get for each file using FCA API)and you will get the name of the latest taken picture.
    Thanks,
