    Binary portability on mobiles symbian

    Hellow,
In order to assure portability (executable file) from a mobile device to another:

    1. Will the two devices have same version of operating system?
    2. Will the two devices have same version of development platform?

Will it take both at the same time (1 and 2)?

    Thank you.

    (1) is enough with exception of binary compatibility promise.

If you also take the minor version number of the OS, currently there is no real difference between 1 and 2.
For Symbian 9.1 and 9.2 besides S60 3rd and S60 3rd FP1 there were UIQ 3 and UIQ 3.1, however for Symbian 9.3 you have S60 3rd FP2 only, for Symbian 9.4 there is S60 5th edition only (which is also referred as Symbian^1), then comes Symbian^2 and Symbian^3 where the Symbian 9.x and S60 notations are discontinued.

Re: Binary portability on mobiles symbian

An exe (well, thinking here a GUI APP) built with S60 2nd Edition will work on S60 2nd Edition FP1, FP2 and FP3 but will not work on the Series 80 or UIQ devices (although the OS layer is compatible). Then there is a binary break at OS level so the counter starts again with S60 3rd Edition (and UIQ3). An application developed with S60 3rd Edition SDK MR will work on S60 3.0, 3.1, 3.1 and even 5.0 and Symbian^3 although the jump from touch to non-touch may require some re-thinking at least at UI level. The same app will not work on UIQ3.

So what matters most is (2) but within the same developer platform, successive releases will be backwards compatible, ensuring (1) as well.
