    Custom fonts

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to add a new .TTF to my application, I've been looking for quite a long time on the net but I haven't found anything on this matter.

Since Symbian phones usually have no more than 2 or 3 fonts and they all look pretty much the same, I guess this should be something very common and the solution should be an accessible one!

    Thanks!

    I just found this:

    http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-6611

Which is really a bummer. Do anybody knows if there is a way to install fonts on the phone in any automatized way? Or manually or something at all?

    Re: Custom fonts

Well, it seems I'm using this thread to implement a bizarre version of the rubber duck method (http://lists.ethernal.org/oldarchive.../msg00174.html). Hope I'm not bothering too many people with it.

One way or another, I managed to install the fonts and use them by adding the necessary steps on the .pro/.pkg files to install the actual .ttf and .otf on the phone's c:\Resource\fonts dir. After restarting the phone (ugh), I was able to create a style sheet using the name of the font.

There is a lot of info on the net about this, but its awesomely hard to come by and you need to join the pieces together from a couple of sites. I wish Nokia would make articles with more "practical" approach.

There is one huge issue... After you install the font, you can't remove the application, the reason seems to be that the font becomes locked. I haven't found any way to get around this, I guess this kills the whole purpose.

    Any ideas?

I think that most of us are too busy fighting the alligators to worry about adding new fonts. It would be nice, but (to mix metaphors) there are bigger fish to fry.

I would agree with you if the platform would be a bit more like the iPhone which packs ton of fonts good for serious UI design. IMHO, I believe that in order to create any serious software product design, having a good set of fonts is a must.

But don't take that as a complaint more as an opinion, I know the work done in Qt for Symbian is amazing and I know the feature will come eventually. In the mean time, this solution will be enough for my case.

Actually Symbian OS fully supports True Type fonts and you can embed custom TTF fonts as you please in your app. It's Qt that doesn't support that functionality on Symbian.

    Hey vladest,

The issue is fully detailed here:

    http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-6611

I think they make a much better job at explaining it than I
Hopefully, it should be fixed by Qt 4.7.1.

    Best!

    Yes, I've read that.
Actually, they proposed just an workaround for FBserv behavior, but I think its better (but not easier for sure) to add an AP to Symbians Font/Graphics engine server
Btw, how is S^4 is dealing with such cases?
