    Ovi Store spamming Android site

I'm wondering why (it appears that) the Ovi Store is spamming the Android forum site:

    http://groups.google.com/group/andro...285856399d34ff

I'm a developer and just received an email from Forum Nokia regarding
Unmatched distribution opportunities at Ovi store at NOKIA.

If u are a developer nd dream it big then grab this opportunity today.
Nokia inviting developers to Become an Ovi store publisher.

    • Easy access to reach millions of consumers worldwide
    • Fast time to market with self serve publishing
    • Monetize your apps and content with Nokia- provided billing
    • Daily time sales and usage reports
Unmatched distribution opportunities at Ovi store at NOKIA.

To Discover How Nokia can make you Instapreneur check this:http://
    www.oviinstapreneurs.com/

Be the next big Mobile Enterpreneur Instantly with the help of Nokia
    Ovi store
The link (slightly broken due to lack of "http" & Google's forwarding scheme) takes you to a site called http://www.oviinstapreneurs.com/ which claims to be a Nokia site. (If it's a phishing site, it's very well done.) The only really suspicious thing about it is the domain name -- Nokia tends to fork off of Nokia.com.

Anyway, this is not doing Nokia/Ovi any good, and it should be stopped.

    It's not Android's problem, it's Nokia's.

Re: Ovi Store spamming Android site

OK, checked the domain name, and found this:
    IP: 69.56.174.146, Host: gator466.hostgator.com

    Address: Suite 205

    City: Houston

    State/Province: TX

    Zip/Postal Code: 77002

    Country: US - United States
So this is apparently a phishing site.

As it is apparently hosted in the US, Nokia should have no trouble shutting it down for trademark issues, if nothing else.

This looks like something marketing contracted, I'll verify it and if it is our ask them to stop it. If it isn't ours I'll ask them to report it to security.

Re: Ovi Store spamming Android site

The IP address is just a serverfarm or something similar. Though "gator" in itself would have some bad smell, but hostgator might be some other enterprise.
What matters is the whois: http://whois.domaintools.com/oviinstapreneurs.com "forum.nokia@live.com", and the like, hehe. So this is a fraud.

Ron, it may look like, that is scams are all about. I would rather kick

    in the ass.

Perhaps after asking if he is a victim of identity theft.

Apparently this is a campaign from a regional office. Thanks for bringing this to my attention early.

Re: Ovi Store spamming Android site

My eyebrow, the right one, was always a little bit raised when I saw people coming and talking about N8-s, obviously prototypes, and in addition asking lame questions. I wondered why Nokia gave them to people who had no idea about coding, and could not keep their mouth shut in addition.
Now this forum.nokia@live.com thing being legitimate brings this thing to "Level 2".

Re: Ovi Store spamming Android site

Recently there have been some messages being posted concerning the Forum Nokia sponsored oviinstapreneurs web site http://www.oviinstapreneurs.com/. This was a direct mail campaign to targeted developers and any discussion or blog messaging was not authorized or implemented with the knowledge of Forum Nokia.

Re: Ovi Store spamming Android site

The odd thing, Ron, is that the multiple spams are all pretty much word-for-word identical (two identical posts on the Android site, supposedly from different authors) -- if you Google for oviinstapreneurs.com you'll see a lot of them, in multiple developer's forums. Clearly this is an organized thing, not something that one oddball developer thought up doing. (Unless it's someone trying to get even with Nokia somehow.)

In any event, it's not improving Nokia's image in the developer community.

Not an oddball developer, but an oddball marketeer that's taken the initiative to do some guerilla marketing thinking that he/she is (they are) clever and are using/registering different accounts on different forums and not realizing how transparent the spamming is. I'd suggest they try to find a career in something else as at least social marketing is a skill they lack.

If you ask me: let it be.

If it were an issue, the Android heads would be screaming bloody murder already. And, after all, HTC sent us a little cart to Nokia World

You think it's a good idea for Nokia to be antagonizing thousands of developers?

    No.

But I think most developers are just ignoring it.

Re: Ovi Store spamming Android site

If Nokia was to respond to each thread then it would just call attention to it. If I was a second astroturf message. It is better to have others respond or just ignore it.

We are tracking down the marketing firm and make sure they are not hired again.
