Qt or Flash lite for gaming

    Hi,

my team is looking into developing 2D games for nokia phones.

QT looks impressive, but is it suitable for developing 2D games or should we go the Flash lite way?

How about Qt graphic performance on nokia devices? Is it fast enough?

Angry Birds were developed in QT, but I think Rovio used OpenGL for rendering, we're trying to target also the mid tire devices, so I guess OpenGL is not an option.

Is QGraphicview fast enough for mobile game development?

    Thanks in advance!

Probably the whole key point on the Graphics View Framework is that one can render it with OpenGL to achieve a great performance. You can do small prototype to see what are the peak values you can achieve with the Graphics View Framework on a particular phone without using OpenGL and if it's suitable for your purpose.

Note that the choice is not necessarily QGraphicsView OR OpenGL. QGraphicsView supports a number of back-ends (OpenGL included), so you can choose what do you want to use in the end without rewrites. That said, like any other framework, you need to know what you are doing, something being done in QGraphicsView is no guarantee in itself - you have to know what you are doing, and what operations are expensive on the devices you are targeting (as a typical example, you have to do your homework with things like http://doc.trolltech.com/4.7/qgraphi...pdateMode-enum)

Thanks, I'll make some tests with Qt.

QGraphicsView should be enough for making simple games.

There has been some performance issues with transparencies when drawing bitmaps. Right now it is as slow to draw images with full 8bit alpha channel, as it is is to draw with 1bit transparency (on/off).

That means that you won't get any boost of cutting back on the transparency levels. Drawing non-transparent tiles (such as background) is lot faster though, so just remove the alpha channel when ever you don't need it.

But still I'd say you can get really good performance with Qt and it will continue to improve in the future.
