Heads up, don't use transparent pngs as icons / screenshots

Just so that other don't have to go through the same:

My content failed QA because the auto-converted screenshots to lower resolution, like 96x96, were corrupted.

I had used a png for the screenshot with transparent background. The screenshot needs to be square, but as phone screens are not, I figured a transparent background is the best.

Turns out what ever image conversion software Ovi is using, it is broken and can't handle transparent pngs.
Thus my content failed and presumably I'm back at the end of the queue.

Re: Heads up, don't use transparent pngs as icons / screenshots

    Hi,
I have had a variety of issues with PNGs not being accepted due to Alpha Channel messages.

Whatever it is, I feel that I will switch to JPS uploads only in the near future. Lower quality, definitely - but both my wife and I are mad as hell as we simply were unable to create a PNG which Ovi accepted.

P.S. In a related issue: it is strange that Ovi staff is not permitted to touch metadata. At other companies, the QA officer would simply scale the images down by hand...

    Hi there,

Thank you for this discussion, I will see this will be forwarded towards Ovi Store. I will keep you posted for any information I will receive on this.

    Best Regards,

This should only affect the item submission, so if your file(s) has/have already passed, it shouldn't take too much time.
From my experience, items have always passed very fast, whereas files take more time (up to a week).

I never had any issue with PNG screenshots (never used transparency though). It may depend on the software used to generate/convert PNG's.

I have used PNG's exclusively for my OVI submissions with no issues so far. I just use PS to make them square and within the OVI size restrictions. I have not used a transparent PNG though...
P.S. In a related issue: it is strange that Ovi staff is not permitted to touch metadata. At other companies, the QA officer would simply scale the images down by hand...
Yes I find the entire OVI submission hurdle jump to be a pain in the ass as compared to any of the other stores I have tried, the others all seem to strive to make it easy on the publisher...
    Cheers,
    Jon

    Hi,
we are using GIMP, and AFAIK use no transparencies either.

I can provide samples of failed files if it is of use!

    All the best
