Playing remote video/audio files in external apps

What is the recommended procedure for playing a remote video file (referred to by http url) in the default video player? If I use QDesktopServices with a url that refers to a local file path I get the behavior I want but if I give QDesktopServices an http url it first launches the default web browser, downloads the file, and then I have to select the file in the downloads dialog in order to launch the video player. What I'd like is to launch the external video player directly given an http url.

Re: Playing remote video/audio files in external apps

UPDATE: OK, looking at the Qt source code itself it doesn't look like QDesktopServices handles http urls in any other way but by opening a web browser, even in cases where the url points to a video or audio file (gui/util/qdesktopservices_s60.cpp). Therefore, I'm attempting to launch the external video and audio players directly via QProcess in the hope that they're sophisticated enough to open and play remote files directly via http. I *think* the default audio player is /sys/bin/amx.exe and I *think* the default video player is /sys/bin/mmsview.exe. Can anyone verify that these assumptions are correct? If so, can you also verify that these apps support http urls as input arguments and/or provide info on argument usage for these apps? I can launch these apps via QProcess but I'm not having luck getting any sort of arguments working with them nor can I find any documentation for them.
