    How to access remote database

    Hi to all,

Is it possible to access remote database with S60 device. If it is possible which API should be used. I am using SQL server as database.

Re: How to access remote database

Sure. You can open a TCP/IP socket to a server, which has a server-side app that does the actual SQL Server access.

You can also use a higher-level protocol such as HTTP to send/receive data (use, e.g., XML requests).

Then there are also particular/specific network protocols JDBC, ODBC, etc. Now, depending on what tools/programming language you are going to use (Java, Symbian C++, Qt, Flash Lite, Python for S60), check what the related developer documentation (SDK and examples) has to offer. If it doesn't have anything to offer, then you need to implement that part yourself.

If you tell us which S60 devices (which S60 platform version they're based on) you are targeting, which programming language you plan on using, and which database server you intend to connect to (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, etc.), it will be easier to provide further help, if you don't find anything suitable in the appropriate SDK.

The developer documentation is online here, if you go through the "Library" link at the top of the page.

Check also the wiki on this site for examples/articles: http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Wiki_Home

It is probably Symbian C++ (due to the location of this thread) with Microsoft SQL Server (people usually mean that when mentioning "SQL server").

In that case, look into how to make HTTP requests from your app:

Then look into MS SQL Server documentation on how to format HTTP requests so that SQL Server returns meaningful data (or if there's no suitable HTTP/WebServices interface to MS SQL Server, create your own protocol and your own server that you talk to, which then makes the SQL Server calls).
