    Working with 5230

    Hi!

I just noticed something odd about an already-tested to near death Java application that I passed to the 5230 to try some stuff out.

Firstly, the app connects to the internet (feature I wanted to test), then it asks for user and a key, then you press the OK "button" (command). It proceeds to another screen and so on, not truly important... This is all tested, and it works in non-touch screen phones quite beautifully.

The thing is that, on the 5230, the OK command doesn't do anything, but there's an Exit command that thankfully works wonders (otherwise, I'd be stuck with it running forever, possibly). But here I don't know if it's the OK command by itself, or if it is that the Display.getDisplay(this).setCurrent() method is faulty or something as well (which would be odd, since I do enter the app on its main screen and all; why not work for other screens?)

...so the issue is, does the OK command work? Is there any peculiarity to the 5230 that makes "normal" Java development that I must consider?

Can't think of anything specific. Could an exception be getting thrown in the commandAction() event, preventing the setCurrent() from being reached? Or a second setCurrent() being executed?

Does the app work on any other Series 60 devices?

Series 60 5th Ed supports on-device debugging, which might help you track the problem. Try the emulator too.

On-device debugging? How can I do that?

    The 5230 has no WLAN...

Also, does the 5230 allow threads in Java? (currently somehow working with the S60 emulator)

    Re: Working with 5230

You can probably do it using Bluetooth or USB as well.

All Java ME devices support multi-threading, without exception. Don't over do the threading, though. There may be limits on some devices to the number of threads (keep it to less than 10, for maximum compatibility, and ideally to just two). Also, beware that scheduling on some devices might be less than intelligent. Threads that are capable of consuming 100% of cpu time sometimes will, preventing timely delivery of UI events. S60 (and Nokia devices in general) are generally well behaved. Lower end (non-Nokia) devices can be a different story...

I have an app that works on good ol' 2330, but doesn't work on 5230... Can it still be that the threads are somehow eating up the CPU time?

    It's unlikely.

    In what way "doesn't work"?

Ehr, never mind. It worked now :/ (seems I have a mood-swinging cellphone...)

    Thanks for all the help!
