    Smile Maps

    Hi,

My application need to display maps. The user must be able to scroll the map continuously with zoomin and zoomout and routing features. Are there any apis for this ? Any of the map service like Google maps, open street maps or OVI maps would do. Are there any apis for accessing this ? Some of these services provide URLs for tile service. There is a google map api for Android. Is there something similar for J2me. I searched and found one googlemap api for J2me. But does that support tiles routing etc ? I didn't get any doc related to that.

    Regards,
    Jayakrishnan.M

Thanks for the quick response. Went through the links. Seems what I want. But are there any licensing issues involved in using google maps like this. Is getting the key free of charge

    Re: Maps

I went through all the related links and what seems to me is that I can use the Google static map service freely in my application. Should be free for commercial applications too. I would be greatly relieved if anybody can confirm this.

So I thought If anybody here have developed similar apps before they can provide me with the info.

Don't take anyone's advise here as legal advise. So whatever is said about this here, regardless of whether someone has done such and app or not, it may not be right.

Ask Google or a lawyer - or both - for clarification as to how Google's terms apply (what they permit and what they don't).

On further digging, found the service can be only used in web based applications. To use it in native applications an enterprise license is required. So does OVI maps provide any official service similar to this ?

Probably not Ovi Maps, but perhaps NAVTEQ does (Nokia's subsidiary, which provides the map and routing/navigation information to the mother company, Nokia, to use in Ovi Maps, too): http://www.navteq.com/

There is an OVI maps tile service. But that is not official. Another member posted the link on the Qt forum. It works well though.

It is best that you do not use any unofficial/unpublished methods here, for your own application, if you wish to publish it. Without clear agreement on what you can and cannot do with the API/service, you're placing yourself at a legal risk. When ever you use someone else's code or service, you really must fully understand what your and their legal obligations are (what the contract/agreement/license means).

    Hello,

Nokia has published the Location Platform, also offering support for the J2ME.

Here is a wiki article, which demonstrates how to use the Map Image API with Java ME.

And here is the Location Platform home page: http://www.developer.nokia.com/Develop/Maps/
