Choosing Free to Paid application UID

    Ciao,

just wanted to have some feedback about UID and apps.
I have a free application with ads on the OVI Store packaged into a sis with a UID.
Now if I want to make it the same application available for a fee (no ads) would I need to use a different UID for packaging or can I use the same one from free app?
What developers are doing in this cases?

my personal opinion would be to use same UID, that way there would not be any possibilities on having two versions installed same time. Though if you don't have problems on having too versions installed same time, then you could also use different UIDs..

    Ciao,

Another consideration is that if a user installs the free version and then the paid version, it will overwrite. Same is true for the opposite, but a paid app can be re-installed more time.
So it seems to me that is fine to use the same UID.

I think I will go for same UI:
    free with ads
    paid without ads

Yep, it would be a bit of user error to replace the paid version with free, but AFAIK the re-instalaltion of the paid should not be problamatic.

An Ovi Store-related aspect is if you are allowed to have two items in the store with the same PkgUID. Especially if the packages are signed by Nokia/Ovi. There may be internal clashes, depending on policies and the actual implementation of the store software. If you take this route, and QA does not complain, at the end probably it is a good idea to test if the two items in the store are really different.
It might be a more peaceful approach to simply uninstall the ad-powered version from the paid one, if it is present.

If you want to have only one version (free without ads) then you can consider the removal of the ads to be an update to the app, at which time you can use the same UID. But if, for some reason you want to have both version (free with ads and free without ads) then you would have to have unique ID's and names for both versions.

Re: Choosing Free to Paid application UID

I have many paid/free apps with same UID. So it most definitely is not a problem.

It in fact, is beneficial as my customers can continue to use the data from the free on the paid.
