    Modifying the standard display..

I am a Java developer. If I just want to do some changes to existing mobile feature, whats the best way to start. I don't know if that's possible, but may be I will ask what I want to do.

I am using Nokia 5800, it allows me to store details to a contact, if I have stored multiple numbers for a contact, I can edit the label. But when I call it just gives me the contact's no. So if I need to add the detail to this display and may be add different images to different numbers of the same contact. Just curious, how I could go about the development.

There's no actual phone behaviour that can be changed via UI themes (just colours and icons, more or less). (Unless the moderators move this thread, it is in the UI themes forum.)

Also, as a Java developer, there's very little that Java allows you to do on the 5800 (the Java virtual machine is rather well isolated from the hardware and the actual operating system). With Java, you can read/write contacts using JSR-75 (PIM, Personal Information Management) APIs, but little more. See the examples in the wiki, for starters: http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu.../Data_Articles

Somewhat more access/control is available, if you use C++ and Qt APIs, and even more than that, if you go all the way to original Symbian C++ level, but there are still restrictions as far as how actual system behaviour can be modified, but at the Symbian level, a skilled developer can override some system features, or at least write an app that does things the way the developer wishes, if the system default behaviour is not enough.

See also the "Develop" link up on the top of this page, for accessing the tools and SDKs, etc., and the "Resources" link for other related things.
