Question nokia 5230 and graphics midlet screen problem

    Hi,

Nokia 5230 is my first touch screen mobile device. I'm testing a midlet in nokia 5230 which uses canvas and graphics api. As soon as midlet starts a circle with arrow and A B C D comes one third of the screen.

I would like to know why is it so. How to disable it? Is it same for all touch screen device?

    Hello MadSum,

I think you are referring to the on-screen keypad which is used in Symbian touch UI based devices for backwards-compatibility with Canvas-based MIDlets that rely on key input. The on-screen keypad simulates the physical keys found on devices without a touch screen. Usage of OSK is recommended only for applications which do not handle touch events at all (non-touch MIDlets), new applications developed for touch devices are recommended to have their own interaction buttons for usability and visual appearance reasons.

The on-screen keypad can be disabled by default by using the following JAD attribute and value on the JAD file:

    Nokia-MIDlet-On-Screen-Keypad: no

    More about the on-screen keypad:

Java Developer's Library 3.11 > Developer's guides > UI and graphics > Touch UI > Touch interaction in Symbian > On-screen keypad (OSK):

Thanks! I don't handle any touch event.

But the problem is every time I build the app by netbeans ide my manual addition to jad "Nokia-MIDlet-On-Screen-Keypad: no". How to add this value permanently.

For one application, you need to add that value manually only once: once the attribute and it's value are set via NetBeans IDE then it is not required to add it later on anymore. This can be achieved via <Project> -> Properties -> Application Descriptor and then pressing the 'Add..' button on the 'Attributes' page.
Otherwise, you are on the right track that you need to add the attribute and it's value for every application separately.

    Hi,

    Nokia-MIDlet-On-Screen-Keypad: no

I assume this Nokia specific attribute won't work for other vendor. Are there similar jad attribute for other vendor?

    Hello madsum,

yes you are right, this is Nokia specific JAD attribute-value pair for Symbian platform so it's functionality is limited to Nokia's Symbian devices only.

Regarding the settings by other manufacturers, unfortunately I don't have such information available so I would suggest you to contact the other manufacturers or posting to the developer discussion boards which other manufacturers may provide for their developers.
