    Windows Phone 8 SDK is now available, with a but

    If you plan on developing apps for Windows Phone 8 please be advised that you will need a Windows 8 Pro to fully take advantage of the SDK. If you have a Windows 8 non-PRO you wont be able to use the emulator. if you have Windows 7 or earlier, you cant use the SDK.

    The download is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=35471

    And, you must have a processor which support Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
    This requirement it's for WP8 emulator. If i understand :
    Intel => icore 3-5-7
    AMD => ??

    I've a Core 2 duo and it doesn't support it
    I wait installation finish. But normally WP7.5 development will be Ok. And develop with WP8 device too (but i can't test now)

    You only need that for the emulator. If you dont use the emulator (if you have a device to test) you should not need that.

    I think so, but to be sure:

    - Download Coreinfo from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...rnals/cc835722
    - Open the command prompt by clicking on start -> type CMD, then right-click "Command Prompt" and Run as administrator
    - go to the folder where you downloaded the tool to and type "coreinfo.exe –v"

    My output. Check if you have on the line at BOLD the "*". If you have, it supports SLAT:

    C:\Tools>Coreinfo.exe -v

    Coreinfo v3.1 - Dump information on system CPU and memory topology
    Copyright (C) 2008-2012 Mark Russinovich
    Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz
    Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7, GenuineIntel
    HYPERVISOR - Hypervisor is present
    VMX * Supports Intel hardware-assisted virtualization
    EPT * Supports Intel extended page tables (SLAT)

    To anyone interested I published a Wiki with a step by step tuturial on how to install the WP8 SDK in a VM with the Emulator working.

    It does require a recent PC but it will allow you to run the SDK in a VM.

    The Windows Phone 8 SDK is awesome! Though it would be nice if Microsoft would've published 7.8's SDK too.

    It will only be available when the OS comes out I'm sure. And it will be probably an update to Windows Phone 8 SDK rath2r than a Windows Phone 7.1.1 SDK, because WP8 SDK targets both Windows Phone 8 and 7.1

    However, in that case there is the 'but' from your initial post. Otherwise yes, we have seen similar things in case of the SDK for a competitor's mobile platform which is not Android from Google.

    If you do not have a 64-bit machine, do not waste your time, as I did, trying to install this SDK. Brilliant move by MS to lock out those of us who have 32-bit machine--which work just fine--and who cannot afford to build new machines just so we can do WP8 development. Can you tell that I am really pissed off?

    Re: Windows Phone 8 SDK is now available, with a but

    Well, it is true that the quick-download on https://dev.windowsphone.com/en-us/downloadsdk does not says anything, but the details page, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=35471, clearly describes the 64-bit requirement.
    While it does not apply to you now, you will be happy to hear that even if you have a 64-bit PC, it will not necessarily run the emulator ("◦Requires a processor that supports Second Level Address Translation (SLAT)").

    Re: Windows Phone 8 SDK is now available, with a but

    I have worked on number SDK for Android and iPhone application development (official and third party), currently trying my hands on HTML5.
    What I learn over these years is that whenever an upgrade is made in SDK some or other feature is added that supports development.
    Sure restricting development over 32-bit machines doesn't sound good but there must be some reasons for Windows of doing this.
