    stl and other file formats

    Dear Nokia.

First of all, thank you for releasing the stl file for the lumia 820. I'm looking forward to make custom casings. I would like to ask however if it would be possible to release a more precise file format e.g for solids like STEP *.stp because those are also easier to model with in engineering/design programs. The stl file is usually the final file you send to the 3D printer and not what I and probably Nokia is modelling with. Thank you for hopefully considering.

I do not know much about the topic, but the 3rd downloadable in the Wiki article, http://www.developer.nokia.com/Commu...ur_Nokia_Phone, seems STEP to me.

Wow, that is fantastic. Thanks a lot. The links I saw in the tech blogs only referred to the stl download. Just opened it. Great!

Re: stl and other file formats

I made sure we published STEP files because in a previous life I was Director of Quality for a small robotics company, and that's what we used to exchange information with our machine shops. It seemed to me that was the most useful all-around format that would work for just about everybody. And of course, the STL files are directly usable by Skeinforge and Slic3r.

    Cheers,

    Fred

    Thanks for that Fred.

I imported the STEP file almost flawlessly into SolidWorks 2001. I say almost because it threw up an error on an object associated with the volume button. The problem does not appear fatal, though, and the model is still usable. Just an FYI.

I will try Alibre Design 2012 next.
