Lightbulb Can we install multiple OS on our mobiles like we have on our desktops/PCs ?

I hope most of us have worked or have information of the machines/desktops where we used to have multiple OS installed. For example: multiple versions of windows or both windows and linux Operating systems on one single machine or hardware. As per the rule in electorinics that the processing power doubles every three year and the hardware size reduced to half. Using the same concept and with today's new technology can we have multiple OS in single computing device(Ipad/Tablets/Mobiles) I was thinking is there a way where we can have the multiple mobile operating systems like Android, Symbian, Windows etc one one single mobile.

If that can be possible then one mobile can serve all the purposes. Ifd Nokia Develop any such technology then Nokia can be a market leader once again globally. If anybody have anything to add in this, you are most welcome.

Re: Can we install multiple OS on our mobiles like we have on our desktops/PCs ?

If you look around, you will see that the vast majority of mobile devices come with a single OS, which can not be changed at all (*). From this point of view it is not really a question if an other OS can be installed, since there is no such other OS.
Mobile devices are more specialized devices than your PC. They are trimmed to run a certain OS, and also they are completely undocumented. Creating a complete set of device drivers for undocumented hardware is not necessarily fun for even the most enthusiast hackers. And it is certainly a hacker thing as with the exception of Android models, device manufacturers do not even allow modifying the OS, which is a far smaller task than replacing it with an other one.
The operating systems are closed source, with the exception of the less known Maemo/Meego, the well known Android and a single, slightly obsolete Symbian^3 variant (which is not open source any more, just a copy has been saved from the time when it has been).

(*) Since Maemo/Meego is Linux-based, you can find Android ports for Nokia Internet Tablet devices (like the N810) and for the N9/00/50-s. Also there were some Windows CE devices (not from Nokia) where you could replace the OS with some early Android variant. They are a bit few in general, and most of these models are not even available any more.

We cant say no, but it can be done. But company has to do more R&D on that angle it is not a big Task.Like Blackberry ,the company acquired QNX and later fully shifted into QNX platform. It depends on company strategies to become market leader. It is my view ,in this app centric world user need touch device and operating system should open then only bundle of hardware company use and make device to popular and if NOKIA provide nokia Map and some MDM feature like Blackberry BES and get some revenue ,company can financial strong and again capture 40% mobile market.

Where is the multi-OS part in your example? If you mean the Android-like layer, it is not provided as OS, requires extra steps like repackaging.

Could he mean n9 as I can remember, the community manage to get n9 to either boot up on android or meego although there seems to be performance issue with android.,it is true that to put other os is hard due to phone specialized hardware but if nokia willing to release the bootloader than anything could be possible like BIOS.Even n9 can install some of the android app thanks the community.

Re: Can we install multiple OS on our mobiles like we have on our desktops/PCs ?

There aro no technical reasons why any mobile phone couldn't support multiple operating systems, dual-booting, etc. The hardware is not an issue in this, either.

However, mobile phone manufacturers do not wish to do so, and with tightly integrated hardware, (phone's are not like PCs in this respect), if the manufacturer doesn't wish to do/support such, there's not much that others can do about it.

So, it can't be done with the vast majority of phone models for sale, and is not generally a practice that manufacturers support and that's why it doesn't exist in similar fashion as with PCs or other general purpose computers.

Somewhere i read though don't remember where there have been successful case where hacker manage to to put other os in the phone which the bootloader is release but i do remember it is older sony ericsson phone model. If only phone manufacture is more open minded then the mobile would be a lot more vibrant

If you mean Linux running on Siemens SX1, that was a little bit long time ago. The N9 (referred in #6) and NIT stuff was actually mentioned in #3 already, see the (*) part. These are not really widespread devices anyway, and with the exception of the N9 they are totally obsolete.
Also, a common thing here is the need for open source OS. These hacks are all about installing Linux or some derivative (like Android) to some device. Regardless whatever unlocked and fully documented phone hardware you can get, Windows Phone, iOS, or the Series 40/Asha platform are all closed source.

Re: Can we install multiple OS on our mobiles like we have on our desktops/PCs ?

Virtualization and OS switching technology has been very popular recently.By help of those software we can install multi OSes.There are some companies giving service in this technology like VirtualLogix .

For example HTC HD2, I think support windows and Android OSes. On this method only device driver is the problem. If same vendor want to support for multi OSes feature, then they can develop common driver to smooth functioning of mobile phones.

See How Mobile OS is installed
Your Mobile company designs a hardware and buid a kernel for your mobile then embed an OS in the mobile which interacts with kernel and the kernel interacts with hardware
    Now coming to your question..
Yes it's possible to install multiple OS but you cant run both at one time. I am not aware about Nokia Lumia..ssss but for any android phone you may google " custom Roms and custom Kernels" You will come to know about Installing other OSs (not actually OS but a ROM) on your Mobile

Most mobile os and ui are develop around the existing kernel. There are quite a lot mobile os out there but most kernel used are still the same.Example android, meego, tizen, sailfish all are different os but the kernel they use is the same linux kernel although there could be some different in linux version they use.if not mistaken window 8 mobile and window 8 desktop also share the same kernel but i am not sure because i rarely follow microsoft stuff.Right now there is even a project that allow user to either boot up window or android.

Pulkitkkr means an implementation detail, a lower level controller software running on the phone. For example if you dig into Symbian sources, there it is referred as "domestic OS". I do not know anything about it, but considering that this layer is hardware dependent, manufacturer dependent and closed source at the same time, its presence probably does not really make 3rd-party porting attempts simpler.
