    Data connection availability check

    Hello

How do i check the availability of a data connection (GPRS/Wi-Fi) on a S40 (Asha) or S60 phone in Java ?

i have tried the documented system properties request

    - "com.nokia.mid.networkavailability" (only check for GSM)
    - "com.nokia.network.access" (always get a "na" no a Asha 311)

i also get a parcial success by trying to establish a connection but got a undesire system message if no connection type is turn on (data connection / Wi-Fi / bluethoot), also getting frequent lag/timeout wait times that can be overcome but the use of a thread.

my objective is to use a transparent method to check if in any data connection is available without the use of the above described methods, without the inconveniances that my come by using them.

Thank you in advance for any response

    Re: Data connection availability check

    Refer to http://developer.nokia.com/Community...tem_properties

    Use - com.nokia.network.access
    available on S40 and S60 devices since S60 3rd edition FP2.

    The possible return values are:
    • pd - Packet data in GSM network
    • pd.EDGE - Packet data in EDGE network
    • pd.3G - Packet data in 3G network
    • pd.HSDPA - High speed downlink packet access for 3G networks
    • csd - Circuit switched data, for example GSM CSD/HSCSD data call
    • bt_pan - Bluetooth PAN network
    • wlan - Wireless network, for example 802.11b, 802.11G or WiMaX
    • ‘na’ Not applicable, the implementation can’t determine the type

If it fails on your Asha 311, try to upgrade its firmware.
    thanks,

    Re: Data connection availability check

HI. Thanks for your advice but my telephone is stuck on firmware version 5.92 (I know current version is 7.xx) but seems like it is an operator block. Any other ideas. Or any ideas how to force upgrade?

    Thanks in advance

    Refer to http://www.nokia.com/in-en/support/a...ftware-update/

If OTA update is not working - try Nokia Suite way.

    Re: Data connection availability check

    Hi, im2amit.
Happyhip.. is out of work today. But I am the original owner of this model which is giving him headaches.
Thanks for your help. I had tried that already.
Doesn't work in model is an Asha 311j. No update OTA is available and Nokia Suite says it has latest version - v.5.92.
So, if there is not an unofficial way to force software upgrade, looks like we're out of luck.
    Cheers, and thanks again.

Try to get it done from nearest Nokia Care point - they might be able to help you.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll do that. Already called them and they say they'll do it.
Hope it solves this issue. We'll post the results.

    Re: Data connection availability check

    Hi again. Doesn't work.
Upgraded to version 07.36 and dones't work.
    "com.nokia.network.access" (always get a "na" n the a Asha 311)
It is a bug in firmware. What are the odds that Nokia guys take a look at this and fix it soon?
how would i communicate this to them?

    Another issue with this version
It is also quite strange that, with this version, when we invoque a data connection (javax.microedition.xml.rpc.Operation), it doesn't work with WiFi. Just works with mobile data connection.
This is really upsetting. any idea about this?

    Cheers,
    Dinis

Is that your only use-case? Or more?
