Bluetooth Low Energy (4.0) on Amber update

    Hi!

Does the latest update of Windows Phone 8, Amber, released a couple of days ago support Bluetooth Low Energy (4.0)?

    Thanks!

    Very good question Joe,

I'm waiting anxiously for this update. Anyone have an update?

What are you expecting from the update?

There won't be any new APIs as that would require an API revision (which won't happen with GDR2, maybe GDR3), so if something is not possible with the current WP8 Bluetooth APIs, then it won't be possible with the Amber update.

What might happen is that Nokia will announce new accessories that make use of Buetooth LE, but they have custom apps to support it. We may hear more about this at their next launch/press event.

    Sad...

I read in some sites that the Amber update would work with Bluetooth LE and i had a hope that some Nokia API was going to be released together.

Nokia, at this current time, cannot introduce new APIs to the Windows Phone platform - MS does that, as it's possible we'll get a revision (or update) with GDR3 but definitely with the major update (8.1 / Blue) early next year.

The main problem here is that the platform (and SDK) are not moving fast enough. Hopefully this will change next year but in the meantime it's frustrating as we have to wait months or (nearly) years for features to be implemented that are taken for granted on other platforms (iOS and Android).

All that Nokia can do is make apps that use 'special' features of their phone then provide Uri Schemes for other 3rd party apps to call. The only other alternative is that Nokia do provide new APIs but that would cause fragmentation as your app would only work on one make of phone, and I don't think that's a good thing.

We simply do not know, most people around are not working for Nokia.
For the "guessing" part, it is a twofold thing: if you search for lumia on https://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/listings.cfm, you will see that there are 2 related certifications for the Nokia Lumia 920: the device itself is BT 4.0, but the OS is BT 3.0. Without having the OS updated, GATT simply can not appear on the API level, but it may still happen that Nokia can supply some applications which access BT drivers/hardware on a lower level.

    I would say no.

I have an 820 with Amber and still says Bluetooth 3.0 and a 720 without Amber that says Bluetooth 4.0.

Pretty much what you can find here and here.
