    app for visually impaired

Can I create an app that will read out the digits as they are keyed in by a visually impaired person and then dial that number?

Also, is there a way to start that app by default so that it has control of the phone from the time it starts up?

    Thanks.

platformRequest is the call which can do some magic for you, including dialling a number: http://developer.nokia.com/resources...n-java-me.html and http://developer.nokia.com/community...t()_in_Java_ME.
However the autostart thing is difficult, Java Micro Edition apps are not really invented for 'taking over' the device. With this particular use case you might get some support with manufacturer API-s, and then there might be such thing.
For the speech synthesis, you could simply play small audio files with the digits (and some control characters maybe).

Thanks for your response. Also I would like to know if I can use the Asha sdk to develop the app and run it on an old s40 phone - the C 02?

That is not a good idea, backward compatibility works in the other direction: if you develop something with an old SDK, there are good chances that it will work on new devices too. However developing with an Asha SDK you may accidentally rely on features which are simply not present on the Nokia C02.
The Nokia C02 models (listed on http://developer.nokia.com/devices/s.../#devicefilter) seem to be built around Series 40 DP 1.0 (with the exception of Nokia C02-01, which apparently builds on Series 40 6th edition). This (these) SDK is available for download, so it would be a straightforward and safe pick.

Thanks again. I had tried the older sdk but somehow it did not download with FDM (free download manager) in firefox or IE (I got a 403 HTTP error). But after I received ur response I tried the native firefox download and that worked.
