i might be getting a bit ahead of myself but...MMG

To create a Mobile Multiplayer Game you would need :

    1) A J2ME client
    2) To be able to connect to a Server by TCPIP (if possible with J2ME)
3)To write the server side app in Java or would it matter.
    4) Some large database that is efficent maybe MySQL

This is just as i see it so it could be wrong.

Can a series 40 phone handle that?
2.5G and 3G networks should be able to transfer the Data.

Would MIDP1 and Nokia 50kb jar limit be too constricting to build a Client that could handle this?

What would be the best Way to create the Server Side. Would it be Java or would another language maybe C++ be better at handling the work load and integrate better with the tools needed.

A Linux or Win Server2k as the OS.

I have no great plan to try and follow up on this i just find it very interesting and wonder what technology would be needed for this kind of thing.

I know it has been done on Series60 using C++.

    Thanks Guys,
    Brian :-D

Every one of the things you said is possible with the current technology. The biggest hurdle is latency. Latency on a mobile network is measured in seconds, so that means that a fast paced action multiplayer game is pretty much a pipe dream for now. But turn-based, play-anytime, slow-update, etc. kinds of multiplayer games are not only possible, they already exist. My company has 3 games out already. They are turn-based : Checkers, Backgammon and BattleShips (that one was just released yesterday ).

There was some discussion about it about 2-3 months ago. Search the forum, there are some ideas from guys who already do similar stuff.

    The things I remembered clearly:
    1. You can rely on HTTP only, no sockets on most Nokia phones
    2. Be ready to regular latencies up to 8 secs.

I read the post so it seems that right now Mobiles(& networks) are not ideal for Multiplayer games.

Its a pity but in the future it should be fine.

What would be the best language to write the server side App in?

And basically would you need your own dedicated server to handle something like this?

Are we talking about the future or the present here?
For now, since you usually have to make with just http, any web-server will do, and you can use any language you're comfortable with (ASP, JSP, PHP, custom C++ or Java servers).
In the future when we get into those real-time action games you'd probably need a dedicated server written in something efficient.
