Full Duplex functionality with public APIs

I've got a following problem: I'd like to record audio and play some other audio simultaneously. This kind of function is often named full-duplex.

I think Nokia phones have this kind of functionality, because of the basic call function. But that works on lower level software compared to what public SDK offers, I think.

Is it possible to create this full-duplex -functionality with public SDK's APIs and if is, how do you do it?

I have introduced myself with the CMMFDevSound class. It seems to have such features, but I still have some problems. Could you help me?

    Thanks,
    Matti Saarinen

    Hi,

I have been trying to do a similar thing...meaning full duplex of audio via the Audio streaming classes (CMdaAudioInputStream and CMdaAudioOutputStream on v7.0).

Apparantly it is not possible to record and playback at the same time.

Then I also tried to use CMMFDevSound but unfortunately with the same results!

Recording and playing at the same time looks to be an impossible job!

Then I tried to record a short piece of data...stop recording...playback a short piece of data....stop playing....etc. but this didn't work out so good :-(

Has anybody had any succesfull audio playing and recording done at the same time? Feel free to tell us!!

    S60 full-duplex audio capabilities

    Hey people!

Did anybody succeed to start full-duplex audio on the Emulator or on a real phone?

Particularly, what should be done in Sound SDK example to provide this functionality?

    Thanking you in advance,
    Max.

Full-duplex is possible in the WINS emulator, but not on any devices(that I know of) yet. Windows is not a true real-time system, so the reads and writes can succesfully preempt each other. Symbian, on the other hand, IS a true real-time system, and will not allow this preempting. I've heard that this is changing in Symbian OS 8.0 and higher, but have no proof.

Re: Full Duplex functionality with public APIs

    Hi all,

I need your help on this problem..well...it's not full duplex...but i don;t know how to call it

I want to do audio recording (using CMdaAudioRecorderUtility) and Audio streamming at the same time

I'm doing this because I want to monitor the sound level (using streamming function) before I record it.

The recorder went well...but if the recorder is ON, so the streamming won't work.

Does anyone know what's wrong? or...does anyone know other way of monitoring sound level without using streamming function?

Thank you very much for the help

    Irma

    Hi ronflor

As you have mentioned that full duplex audio is possible in WINS platform.
I wanted to know about the following

    1. which version of SDK did you use
    2. did you change any example application to incorporate full duplex feature?
    if yes then which example
    3. did you create any new threads for full duplex feature

Any feedback will be highly appreciated

It is not possible to have Full duplex functionality with the present priority and preference values and I think they can be worked with custom values which are not made public by NOKIA.

    Hi Sudhakar

Thanks for feedback. But it seems that somebody has already done full duplex with public APIs.(check "ronflor" post)

Full duplex functionality can be done using S60 FP2 which is for Symbian OS v8.0.

You just need to specify the correct prioritypreference values.
zg posted them to discussion.epoc.C++ a couple of days ago.
Works at least on a 6630.

Can you provide a link to the post? I just want to see how it is described there.

Is it the same case with N71 phones as well, that Nokia didnt make the full duplex audio APIs public ?

The list of supported phones and what exactly does Full Duplex Audio do is found in the documentation. You can download the Full Duplex Audio example from https://pro.forum.nokia.com/site/glo...umentation.jsp
if you have a Forum Nokia Pro account.

Yes, and you can even find it in the source code for the phones ;-)

    Sorry, I sit down.
