    Color Pictures with WML

    Hi. If I understand correctly, WAP 1.2.1, which most of the Nokia phones are supporting now, does not support XHTML, and I understand that WML only supports monochrome pictures of WBMP format.

    If it only supports WML, is there any way to browse colour pictures using a WAP 1.2.1 phone?

    Thanks.

    Yes of course, you can use images with gif format its only a matter of handset capability (nokia 6600 / 3650/ 7650).

    Thanks. Can I say that a majority of handphones (including others not manufactured by Nokia) are able to support colour GIF pictures in the WML code, and that there are very few MMS-enabled phones that do not support it?

    handsets Characteristics

    This link will be very helpful:

    http://jnet1.com/wapresources/v_0.4_alpha/wurfl.xml

    it will include all handsets Characteristics, look for the "image_format" part on the wurfl.XML (for each handset)

    <group id="image_format">
    <capability name="wbmp" value="true" />
    <capability name="gif" value="true" />
    </group>

    Thanks

    Supposing I would like to use color pictures. But knowing that that depends on individual mobile phone capabilities, how will the mobile phone know when to use the color version or the monochrome version?

    the phone will use the given image name and will know how to handle it depend on the file extention (.gif - .wbmp)

    be aware that you need to define on the server the mime type for wbmp image: Open the IIS --> on web site: --> properties ---> Edit on computer mime map --> new type -->

    Associated extention: .wbmp
    Content type (MIME): image/vnd.wap.wbmp

    Hi yosi1. What I meant was if I have a wml page with a picture that would appear in colour for a phone with colour screen and in b&w for a phone that doesn't. How can I serve a wml page that would be in colour for phones with colour capabilities while in b&w for those that don't?

    Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_USER_AGENT")

    you need to recognize you handset by using the User Agent command:

    <%

    Dim UserAgent
    Dim extension

    UserAgent = Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_USER_AGENT")

    Select Case UserAgent

    Case "Nokia6310/1.0", "Nokia6210/1.0"
    Session("extension") = "wbmp"

    Case "Nokia6600/1.0 SymbianOS/6.1 Series60/1.2"
    Session("extension") = "gif"

    Case "SonyEricssonT68/R201A UP.Link/5.0.2.3d"
    Session("extension") = "gif"

    Case "Mitsu/1.2 (Eclipse) MMP/1.1"
    Session("extension") = "jpg"

    End Select

    %>

    <p><img src="Image/MyImage.<%=Session("extension")%>"/></p>
