Does variable name extremely effects to JAR size?

Does it necessary to change variable name at the last minute, likes 'actionId' --> 'a', 'delayAction' --> 'b'? I ever heard that compiler will do thing like this with local variables but not with global , Is it fact? If yes, what about global variable? Does't it have any approach to manage this stuff such as a table for mapping variable with its address in memory at runtime? And can you suggest me the article or book about this stuff? Thank you for your help.

Of course it depends. For such an optimization you can use Obfuscation (I use this tool in a JBuilder 9/10). It renames all the classes and variables to the shorter variant.
