which UTF-16 endian does 6230 support?

I always thought 6230 support regular getByte("UTF-16") encoding, but some feedback says it doesn't. It will throw EncodingNotSupportedException.

So I guess it would support either UTF-16E or UTF-16L. But how do I tell which one is supported or which one doesn't?

You can find out only by trial and error!

I don't think it will support any of these. It might support UTF-8 (though some devices won't).

Many devices will support only ASCII ("usascii") and ISO Latin 1 ("iso-8859-1").

If you want cross device support, I'd recommend writing your own conversion routines for bytes-to-strings.
