I want to write a Symbian application for my Honors Project

    Hi every one,

I am Hong Kong university student, my major is Computing Studies -- Information Systems.

I want to write an application featuring symbian OS but I have no ideas about symbian.

Could you give me some suggestions?

I have an idea is that I write an application that people can connect to a database and retrieve some information like contacts, documents. And I want to have different people having different privilages accessing different files.
    I know C and JAVA.

Please give me some comments, thank you!

    Cheers,
    Angus

    Sure. Why not.

It'll be easier if you already known C++ (otherwise you have two relatively steep learning curves ahead; three if you also need to learn to program first).

Start with the appropriate SDK (Software Development Kit) for the phone model you are targeting, other documentation, sample code, etc., from http://forum.nokia.com/

Take also a look at books such as those on:
    http://forum.nokia.com/books
    http://www.symbian.com/books

You can also do the app in MIDP Java (J2ME, Java 2 Micro Edition), but it will be more restricted in what can be done with data on the phone (also depends on which phone it is that you are targeting).

    Hi Peter,

Thousands of thanks for your kind reply.
I don't know C++ but C and JAVA, do they help?

As you can see my scop from the first post, do you think I am able to finish it within 2 semesters? Or I can do even more on it?

    Thank you again!

    Angus
