Interfacing a microcontroller to a cell phone

    To anyone who may help:

We are a group of engineering students and part of our final project consists of interfacing a microcontroller to a phone (i.e. through a serial port) so that we may have the phone send SMS if the microcontroller software chooses to do so.

What we are not sure of is how to make this connection between the microcontroller and a cell phone. Is this a serial connection? what communication protocol does it use?

Your help on this would benefit our project tremendously. Thank you in advance for your help. Please cc any answers to vargasv@msoe.edu

    hi all,
Well as a matter of fact its a co-incident that i am also involved in a project which requires interfacing of mobile phone to microcontroller. So,i would well come any help material regarding this . at my e-mail :-

use mbus or fbus, bluetooth or irda.

i dont think the sync ports which operate with PC connectivity sdk will help since we dont have that for micros.

Re: Interfacing a microcontroller to a cell phone

I was reserching in this issu, there is a nokia propietary protocol called F-BUS, using this protocol we could send SMS and other things this our movils. Here is some of the best web that I found usefull information.
    http://www.embedtronics.com/nokia/fbus.html
    http://wiki.gnokii.org/index.php/Protocol_description
    http://esm.cis.unisa.edu.au/new_esml...e%20phones.pdf
Also key for google serch: nokia fbus protocol
Now I'm looking for some nokia oficial information about fbus protocol

    Hi all,
It seems that we are all involved in the same project...
I would like to interface a Nokia 1100 with a PIC microcontroller.
Does anybody has official info about fbus protocol??
I´ve found info about a PC connector in:
    http://www.panuworld.net/nuukiaworld...ables/fbus.htm

Good luck, and I'm waiting for your answers....
    Bye

Re: Interfacing a microcontroller to a cell phone

    Hi all,
I am Petros and this is my first post in this forum. Thanks for accepting me, well,
I am also involved with interfacing microcontroller to a cell phone.

I use pic16f84a and nokia6210 cellphone. Pic interface with 6210 through a DLR-3 cable and a max232 (neccessery due to invertion inside the DLR-3 cable). USE of AT commands.

    at beggining...
I have start using PC (hyper terminal), hardware serial port (com1 or com2), DLR-3 and 6210 and it was succesful. I have also tried infrared using hyper terminal (with the virtual port (e.x. port5)) of PC and phone's iR. It was succesful too.
Next step was to replace PC with PIC, i did it and it was ok.

Last i tried to connect my 6230 with PIc but i failed.
Using infrared or bluetooth (virtual serial ports) and PC - hyper terminal it was ok, but i can't do that with physical serial port, so i can't do that with PIC. Have anyone any idea how i can?

I have found the fbusTX-RX signals of the phone (i mean at the bottom connector of the phone) but i don't know how to interface with these. Can i interface with at command like the way i did it with 6210 or i must only use fbus style communication?

thank U all and good luck with your projects.
    Petros GR, zante.
(i am not sure about my english, i hope u understand me!!)

you might need a level convertor chip, the PC's RS port works with signal levels between +12V and -12V, some laptops use +8V to -8V. your phone works with 0V to 5V. the timing etc is all the same, just need to convert the signal levels.

Re: Interfacing a microcontroller to a cell phone

    Hi,
I want power to be delivered at a socket when a sms message
arrives at my cell phone. To do this I want to interface the cell
phone with a microprocessor like 8085. I want an interrupt signal to be
sent to my microprocessor when the sms arrives at my mobile phone. But I am
unable to understand how to connect the cell phone to my
microprocessor.Further it would be better if there could be a method
to verify the number from which the message has arrived before giving the power.
Now I found something check out the link I found
    http://www.epanorama.net/wwwboard/messages/6009.html
over here i found a link to this site
    http://www.epanorama.net/links/tele_mobile.html
let me know if u found this useful
pls send me any info u find at samik_mukherjee@mindtree.com

I made this sms control based on infos from different sites,
simply sms the right keyword and the corresponding led will switch on/off after that device will reply as confirmation.

Fbus is not that difficult actually... but ... How about creating full serial communication between Midlet and controller? Any ideas?

initially when the thread was started it was to deal with old raw firmware only devices which didnt have symbian,midlet,etc...looking at the thread now with a different requirement will not get the answer

ok with above question, you will be able to acheive this if you are able to trace down the data exchanged between ur device and pc suite. try Hyperterminal[it will be tough anyway]. With that data in place, you can write a driver in the microcontroller firmware code to map the USB connection as a virtual COM port and proceed further.

Unhappy Re: Interfacing a microcontroller to a cell phone

I'm doing the PIC to NOKIA SMS project too!
using the f-bus, my fone is a 2310.
I can send a software version request to the fone and get a response, the fone acknowledges my request then sends me a version number message back to my PIC. I can send SMS messages...BUT...if i call the fone from another fone, or send it an SMS message there's nothing comming out the NOKIA f-bus.. i was expecting some sort of "..hey, getting a text message here.."
reading thru the posts i don't see anyone having that problem, nor can i find it on google. does anyone know why this is?? if you know please email me at mcgurk. ryan @ gmail. com

Re: Interfacing a microcontroller to a cell phone

So in three years nobody came out with a working phone-to-pic circuit?!?

penoy_balut's project looks like the best, I hope he's still in touch with the forum...

I think an alternative way could be interfacing PIC to phone using IRDA (available in old, and then cheap , phones). But... how?

    Hi Cassioli,

Yes, IRDA is an an available alternative, so is Bluetooth.
But, I would rather use the data cable rather than the IRDA to interface with the PC. Naturally the connection would be faster as I am using a wired media rather than a guided media,
Moreover, I have seen many such interfacing projects built by students, generally using Visual Basic as it may be easy on that platform.

May be you could try on that, if you have skills in VB.
