Question Using VS2005 with VS2003 compiler?

I know that VS2005 cannot be used to compile projects created by Carbide.vs for VS2003 because the compiler architecture is different. At least that's what Mitts explained (did I understand incorrectly?). Is there a way to instruct VS2005 to use a different compiler (like the one that comes with VS2003 or even CW) and debug with the VS2005 debugger? I don't care if I don't have Carbide.vs installed inside VS2005, I can just create the projects inside VS2003 and update the MMP files myself. Is this possible?

Re: Using VS2005 with VS2003 compiler?

At this time, there is no way to use Visual Studio 2005 to undertake any Symbian developement.

It is not possible to use a different x86 compiler with the SDKs than the one supported with the SDK. There reasons for this are many but suffice to say, it's not technically possible.

Symbian C++ SDKs use a specific compiler for x86 compilation for the S60 emulator, as they use a specific version of ARM compiler for target builds. The x86 compiler worked with the CDB debugger format which was standard in Visual Studio 2003 (and Vs.6) but Microsoft has deprecated the CDB interface in 2005 and it no longer works as it did in 2003. The new interface used by the debugger is not public. Nokia is working with Microsoft to update the support but there is no planned release date, and it can't happen much before the 4th quarter of 2006.

We're hear the requests to make VS 2005 work with S60. As you can imagine, negotiating with Microsoft has more than just technical elements, it's fraught with politics too. We're making progress on getting access to the debugger interfaces but it will be some time before we're able to update the Carbide.vs support to include VS2003.

Re: Using VS2005 with VS2003 compiler?

    Hi guys!

I am really surpised while reading this.
I am succesfully using vs2005 with UIQ, s60v12, s80v20, 7710 sdks with external vc6.0 compilres.
Ofcourse all project files i've created manually - but it was not so trickly.

All works very fine, and vs2005 debugger works fine too.

Now i am facing to new s60 v3 sdk, which has not direct support to ms nmake/cl compilers support.

So i would like to ask - how to perform command line build with s60 v3 sdk and naked vc2003 toolchain.
Unfortunatelly Carbide.vs failed to install because vc2003 is not installed :(

Probably if this problem will be solved, then s60 v3 sdk will work with vc2005 ;)
