"Authorization failed" message displayed when installing jar file

    Hi,
I got an error message "Authorization failed" whenever I tried to install a jar file (call it X.jar) on my Nokia N90.

For other jar files (they are basically simple applications) that I have I had no problem installing them. But X.jar kept giving me the error message. It runs perfectly well on the emulator on my PC with Eclipse IDE.

I read that maybe I should get my jar file signed. I tried to do so by signing it with a (free) digital certificate from Ascertia - to no avail.

I read too that it could be that my phone does not support external libraries. However, these libraries are already a part of my X.jar. The class files are in it.

Could it be due to other reasons? Has anyone encountered similar problems?

Appreciate if anyone can offer any advice. Thanks in advance.

Re: "Authorization failed" message displayed when installing jar file

Hi capricious28! Welcome to Nokia Discussion Boards!!

The authorisation Failed message might be due to several reasons.

    1) May be due to that the MIDlet is using APi's that are not supported by the phone. [Even though class files are bundled with .JAR; these class files might be accessing unsupported APi's]

    2) Also might be due to some problem while Signing. It is not necessary that the app needs to be signed. But Signing will makes the app trusted and remove the permission messages.

Hope this links are of some interest!.

Question Re: "Authorization failed" message displayed when installing jar file

I am encountering this issue on a N91 (Series 60 3rd ed.) with a jar file that installs successfully on a Nokia 6630. I'm using the https and file read permissions. My Jar is signed with a Verisign certificate.

The signed application download gets all the way to the end of the installation process and then quits with "Authorisation failed" message.

When I install only the jar file I get the following error:
    App.closed:
    Installer
    ViewSrv11

I've never seen this type of behavior before on other phones... any ideas?

Add a proper api permissions, so that u dont get authorization error problem. When u are using any networking api's dont forget to give permissions to the api inj your midlet.

Question Re: "Authorization failed" message displayed when installing jar file

Are you saying I should add the permissions to the JAD/JAR? If so, I am already doing that. To clarify, Here is the JAD file (which works on the 6630, but gives error on N91). Note that I've deleted the full signing values because they aren't necessary here :

    MIDlet-Name: MyApp
    MIDlet-Version: 0.0.1
    MIDlet-Vendor: MyCompany, Inc.
    MicroEdition-Profile: MIDP-2.0
    MicroEdition-Configuration: CLDC-1.1
    MIDlet-Jar-URL: MyApp.jar
    MIDlet-Jar-Size: 209273
    MIDlet-Description: My Description
    MIDlet-Icon: /mAppIcon.PNG
    MIDlet-Info-URL: http://www.mywebsite.com
    MIDlet-Permissions: javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.read, javax.microedition.io.Connector.https
    MIDlet-Permissions-opt: javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.read, javax.microedition.io.Connector.https
    loglevel: 0
    autoFlush: 0
    MIDlet-1: My App, /mAppIcon.PNG, com.myapp.MyMIDlet
    MIDlet-Certificate-1-1: keyvalhere
    MIDlet-Certificate-1-2: keyvalhere
    MIDlet-Jar-RSA-SHA1: keyvalhere

Re: "Authorization failed" message displayed when installing jar file

    Hi,
I just had this error on an N80, and found the problem was typos (spaces) in the "MIDlet-Permissions" entry of the jad.

    Worth checking.

Re: "Authorization failed" message displayed when installing jar file

    Just my 5cents,
When you have a midlet already installed and the following holds:
    1) the "new" midlet (downloaded OTA) is not signed AND
    2) the already installed midlet was signed AND
    3) the already installed midlet had permissions (through the application manager) that cannot be set for the new midlet (for example always allowed for internet access)

    then I get authorization failed.
This (IMHO a bug) makes sense.

this is on various N series phones,

Not a bug. (if I understand your description...)

    MIDP spec states
"In all cases, an unsigned MIDlet MUST NOT be allowed to update a signed MIDlet suite."

What about modifying manifest.mf file, I've seen that there are some parameters as "Midlet-permissions".. Does these permissions control th authorization tak while installing .jar files?

Re: "Authorization failed" message displayed when installing jar file

Hi, this discussion mainly happened in February, 2006. That was 8.5 years ago. Even the most recent post is from 6+ years ago. They were discussing about Java ME on Symbian-based devices, an operating system which was discontinued 2.5 years ago.
Unless you are really working with Symbian devices, it may be better to start a new discussion and describe the issue you are facing, including the device/platform you are working with (if you click back to the board, http://developer.nokia.com/community...e-Java-General, the blue "+ Post New Thread" button is located just below the list of discussions).
