    Big Problemmm...

    Hi,
    I have a problem when creating a new Symbian project in VS.NET 2003.
    The message box with the following message is shown immidiately after I create a "New Symbian OS Project" (or "New Nokia Symbian Project") project and selecting
    "Project Template : " anything

    then click "Finish"

    --------------------------------------------------
    Error
    Error in new project creation. Value cannot be null.
    Parameter name: path1
    --------------------------------------------------

    I use Carbide.vs.2.0
    I have installed Series60 SDK 2.1 for Visual Studio .NET

    Does anyone knows what a problem is?

    Thanks.

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    Can you both select the "New SymbianOS project" and "New Nokia Symbian project" wizard? This should not be possible as one belongs to NDS and one to Carbide.vs, which cannot be installed at the same time.

    If this is the case it would seem that either NDS 1.0/1.1 uninstallation has failed or you have installed NDS 1.1 after you installed Carbide.vs. Is this possible?

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    In the previous case, it seems that the issue related to NDS and Carbide being installed at the same time, are you sure that this could not be the case for you as well?

    If not, can you post the offending .mpp file?

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    I downloaded the Recorder sample that the .mmp file was from and imported it without any prob's, so it seems that there is some snag in your system setup.

    First of all, from the way the .mmp file has been updated you seem to have imported the projects as Symbian9 even though they are for S60 1st or 2nd Edition? But even importing as 3rd edition does work for me...

    So between installing Carbide and doing the import, have you done some other modifications to the system relating to Symbian OS development?

    Where did you extract the files from the zip, info what file? Can you give the full path?

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    I have the same problem. I am using Visual Studio .Net 2003, version 7.1.3088 .

    I click File->New->Project
    then i select "New Symbian OS Project"
    after that "Create Symbian OS project" wizard appears
    then i select "S60 simple hello world application" as a template
    and "S60 2nd FP 2 for .NET" as SDK.
    Then i click "next" and then "finish". After a while some files have been created. But then an error occurs like that ;

    =====================

    Error in new project creation. Value cannot be null.
    Parameter name :path1

    =========================

    but i have never installed NDS.

    And could you recommend me a book or tutorial for beginners?

    Thanks

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    No way to recreate the issue, I wonder what could be that cause?
    Is his Carbide 2.0.1? Did you have Carbide 2.0 installed at all?
    What are the locations that you have selected for:
    - Carbide.vs
    - the SDKs
    - your projects

    The best tutorials on Carbide.vs are the Getting started guide found in the /doc folder under the Carbide.vs installation folder and the tutorials created by Andreas Jakl, see http://developer.mopius.com/tutorials/carbide_vs.php

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    A few additional questions:

    - Do you use some form of source repository, eg Rational ClearCase or similar?
    - Can you post the full project creation log (from the Visual Studio Output window)
    - After the error, does the project exist and if it does, what files does it contain (you can eg link a screen shot - in .png preferably)

    Here are Locations ;
    D:\Nokia\Tools\Carbide_vs -> Carbide 2.0.1
    D:\Symbian\8.0a\S60_2nd_FP2 -> SDK
    D:\works -> for projects

    >>>> Do you use some form of source repository, eg Rational ClearCase or similar?
    No , I don't.

    >>>> Can you post the full project creation log (from the Visual Studio Output window)

    Here is output;
    -------------------------
    Creating project...
    Adding files...
    Updating build configuration...
    -------------------------

    Only these lines apears on output.

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    Can you try one more thing? Can you open the solution (by selection Open solution - I think, I'm not by my work computer) and then selection the solution file (in the project root directory, <project name>.sln. What happens in this case?

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    Hi,

    Sorry, I was not at my sharpest last night, from you dir listing I should have seen that the .sln file was missing.

    So what it seems is that there is a problem with you being on drive D that results in Visual Studio refusing to create the project, the error message has been located to be a VS error, not one generated by our code.

    Could I ask you to try one thing. Could you edit one template to see if we can provide you with a work-around?

    First, locate the Guide to writing temples (in /Doc under Carbide.vs home directory), it might come in handy. Then locate the Carbide.vs template directory for project templates, in your case D:\Nokia\Tools\Carbide_vs\Templates\ProjectTemplates.

    Choose a template for testing, my example is based on the SimpleHelloWorld. To work on that template, go to \S60-SimpleHelloWorldApplication. In that directory there is a file called template.xml, open that for editing in Visual Studio.

    Locate the first line in the template.xml with a <file.. statement and add a line

    <project projectName="$(Basename)">

    just before that one. You should end up with something like:

    ...
    <project projectName="$(Basename)">
    <file source="tsrc/basename.cpp" target="$(sourceDir)/$(Basename).cpp"/>
    ...

    Next, just before the end of the file, add
    </project>

    before the last "</template>", your file should end something like:

    ....
    <file source="aif/list_icon_mask.bmp" target="$(aifDir)/list_icon_mask.bmp"/>
    </project>
    </template>

    Save the file and open Visual Studio for working on Symbian OS.

    Now try to create a project using the modified template (S60 Simple Hello World Application). Does this work? What about building etc?

    Just to understand your setup better, why are you running Windows on D, do you have dual boot machine with Linux or something similar? Also, does your system have access to the C:-drive or is the C:drive totally missing?

    Re: Big Problemmm...

    I am sorry, i couldnt do it. Could you send me that changed xml file. I could find the template but coulnt find where to modify. I tried something but didnt worked.

    It was just a mistake while setting up windows. I couldnt recognized until all done and windows started up. I saw that windows in on D :(

    Yes, i have access to C drive.
