The bitmap's color number in symbian is only 256? Please Help!!

I have tried to display the pic on the screen, but I only can show the 256 colors bitmap, I used the bmconv try.mbm /c12try.bmp.
The try.bmp is 256color's BMP file. I think the 4096 colors bitmap should be displayed too. But when I make the BMP file to 16bit, the bmconv will give an error message say that the source file is broken.
Is 16bit file can't be convert to c12?
    Is 12c is 4096colors and 12bit?
I just what to show more colors than 256. Please give me a hand.
    Thanks!

try making the original bmp with 24-bit colors, could be that the bmconv does not understand the 16-bit color format.
