Exclamation PNG problems on Nokia 6230i

    Hi!

While porting a game to a series of handsets I found a bug in the 6230i: it didn't loaded one of the images. After re-saving the image again in gimp it worked. The same image worked on the 6230. Also my PC image viewers have no problem with it. It's pretty strange for me, because until now i tought only sagem and samsung have buggy png decompression.
So, my question is: did you know about such a bug? if yes where is exactly the problem?
(I try to find out if I can post the image here, if yes then by posting the image maybe you can find easier the source of the problem)

And here are the images. The buggy one:

And the working one (resaved in gimp):

So, what could be the problem?

If it didn't load of the images it should have given you an Exception. Did it do it?

Any chance that saving your file again has reduced significantly the file size? This way the problem you experienced could have been an Out Of Memory error.

Re: PNG problems on Nokia 6230i

It probably gave an exception, but I don't know what was it.I dont have the phone, so I made a test midlet which tried to load these two images and I asked a friend of mine to test it. There is probably no problem with the image size, the buggy one (comressed with pngout) is 207 bytes (the image size is 10x18). The resaved one is a bit bigger, 210.

The problem is probably in the decompression algorithm (inflate, I think that's how it's called) in the phone, since on the PC programs don't have any problem with it. I tried to analize the encoded stream (the IDAT chunk) from the PNG file, but since I don 't know too much about deflate I didn't find any interesting... except one thing which I didn't yet understood: when the huffman tables were decoded, the buggy one contained only one entry for the distance dictionary, and the value was relatively big (~6000). But I don't understand it, since the good one has two entries, but the distances were not used in the encoded stream.

Anyway, I think I'm getting too tehnical hear. I was just curious if you can test and debug the png decoding algorithm with this image.

    Hi!

Can you send me those images?
I want to analyze them, maybe I can find out where is the problem.

Thank you for your interest in PNGOUT.

Some mobile devices ship with a version of zlib (1.2.1 and possibly earlier versions) that contains a bug that rejects valid deflate streams.

Both PNGOUT and PNGOUTWin have an option to work around this bug. The resulting file will have to have a few extra bytes.

If you are using PNGOUT, add

    -zl121

to the command line. In PNGOUTWin, it is on the Compatibility tab under Settings.

-11502 is a Symbian error... try the Symbian C++ discussion board.
