is it possible to launch a local Java app from a browser?

Hello. So my question is not about *downloading* an app, which I know you can do. The question is given a fully customizable XHTML page, can that somehow launch a local Java app? Thanks!

Due to the sandbox model conception of the JVM the answer is NO...definetly!

so the question is: what do you want to do ?
    Thx

    Hello there,

What do you mean by citing "sandbox"? MIDP 1.0 unsigned MIDlets or JVM sandbox concept?

I think that KVM or CLDC HI or anyother (JBlend?) can be a barrier but what about the browser? I think we have constraints on its side as well.

The OSS browser that Nokia is working on has Javascript support AFAIK, that's amazing, but what can be done with that when considering integration?
Probably nothing and i think there's no such an integration planned. Does it make sense?

The browser seems to be what web developers and AJAX guys would like to have in the mobile - check more at http://opensource.nokia.com/projects...ser/index.html

Does Python play any role in the stack when including the OSS browser?

I'd like to have answers to those questions!

Hi Guimel. Let's say you know that a Java app exists on a Series 40 like the 3155, and it's in the "applications" menu. You know the name of it also. Can a page from the WAP browser launch that app? Is there any funky javascript or hack available for this?

I never heard or seen of it. sorry. but again, what are you trying to do. Maybe you get get a PUSH to go through browser, thus waking a MIDlet registered for that PUSH

Can you tell me about that? Could a WAP page initiate a PUSH that would launch a MIDlet?

Let me try asking another way... if I want to launch a PC program, I would use c:/program files/blah.exe
Is there anything like that from WAP, for a MIDlet on the handset?

i dont know of anyhting, I just thought that since the browser can handle incoming PUSh messages, that maybe the message could PUSH Registry launch the MIDlet, I dont think it would work, but you might look into it more.

I understand what you want to do, but there is no ouright solution. Maybe if you klet us know why you would want to do it, i.e. an scenario, then might be able to figure out a workaround.

One workaround I see is to put a link in your web page with something like "localhost:5234" and have the user click it. Your midlet would be registered with Push Registry at the very same location, and maybe it would be triggered by the browser trying to connect to a local socket.

However, to be honest, I have never tried such a stunt and I don't have the slightest idea of whether it would work.
