Nokia Tech Specialists, can you help me in installing User Certificate in Nokia 6230i

    Hi,
Currently i am facing problem in installing new User certificate in Nokia 6230i. I have taken a personal certificate from Globalsign and export it to some file say XYZ.cer. Now with the help of USB cable i copy the exported XYZ.cer file into Nokia 6230i. Now i want to install this exported certificate into Nokia browser.
Nokia shows the certificate name in its list. But i didn't see option of "install" anywhere. How i can install this certificate. Please guide me the steps by which i can install this certificate. Does i need some kind of installer?
After installing this certificate can i view the certificate contents like issue date, expiry date, fingerprint etc.?

As far as i know certificate comes with the private key. This private key get installed into the browser and public key goes to Certification authorities(one who issues this certificate). Can i have access to this private key and password associated with the certifiacte.

Can u tell me some specific URL which issue Certificate for demo purpose.
Please correct me if i am wrong somewhere.
Please give some response i need urgently.

    Regards,
    Umesh Bansal.

    hi umeshbansal,

i have similar issues, see this thread, still waiting on a reply from nokia. I was trying to manually install the Verisign CA certificate, but similar to your issue.

    http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/fo...ad.php?t=76457

You can try putting the certificate on a web server, setting the correct mime type for the certificate on the web server, then if the device understands the mime type, SUPPOSEDLY you can download and install it with the devices web browser.

Please POST if you figure it out!

    Small tutorial…
Although this is for code siging and self-signed certificates, the included links (especially at the bottom) should give you enough hints, to solve this issue on your own. Additionally have a search for the "Nokia WAP Phone Security" PDF document at Forum Nokia.

umeshbansal79, do you need a code siging certificate or one for a SSL connection (HTTPS)? A certificate authority for code siging cannot be installed onto a Nokia Series 40 device.

Jason Glass, please do not hijack other treads. Your problem is a bit different from my point of view. Anyway it has not contributed to this one…

Traud is correct: it's impossible to install your own certificate in a Series 40 device, as the certificate store is closed. However, what you're trying to do can be done in Series 60, like traud himself has done in his tutorial.

    Hey Troud and Dcrocha,

Troud, you said you thought you could install a self signed certificate on the 6101 which is series 40 isnt it? But Dcrocha, says the sore is locked/closed.

So can you install a self signed cert, or is it only CA certs?

    Thanks,

How often do we have to go through this?

You should be able to install a certificate (self-signed or not) on all Nokia devices via the browser. As I wrote earlier, you need the right certificate type and not only the right MIME media type. Done this here myself with all Nokia devices (… Series 40, Series 60 …), I have.

However, only on Nokia Series 60 2nd (and later) Edition this certificate can be used for (Java ME and Symbian C++) code signing. In all other Series the certificate is for SSL or WTLS only.

Sorrrrry, Troud, just wanted to make sure, dcrocha is an expert and it concerned me when he/she said cant" install your own certificate in a Series 40 device, as the certificate store is closed."

Thank you for even more clarification Traud!

    Just to clarify things:

The certificate store is closed for code-signing certificates. For SSL or WTLS certificates, of course you can install your own.

What you can't do is to sign a midlet with a self-signed cert and then try to install your cert in the s40's certificate store and expect it to authenticate the midlet.

thanks daniel for even more clarification!

and you say "closed for code signing certs", but then you say "self signed" certs, i assume it is also closed for installing Code Signing Certs from a respected authority, such as verisign? Or the java UTI code signing cert?

Yes, it is also closed for installing those certs, even from Verisign or other trusted authority. In our internal tests with applications signed with certificates whose roots are not in the certificate store , we have to reflash the (s40) phone adding the needed root. It's quite a lot of work

    Hello,

One more question: It is possible to install a Self-Signed-Code-signer certificate in any Nokia Java SDK?
That will be usefull in development phase.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jose

Yes, if I recall correctly that worked for me in a Platform SDK. I tried several of Series 40. There it is even possible to adjust the security-domain, so you do not need to create a certificate yourself, allowing to test signing in a later step (own CA, well-known CA). To install the certificate, use the internal WAP-browser of the SDK.

    Traud,
What do you mean by "There it is even possible to adjust the security-domain, so you do not need to create a certificate yourself"? Would you please give us a more detail steps what to do?
Basically, I want to solve the following problem.
I have a Nokia 6085 phone. I developed a J2ME application which use the getSnapshot of VideoControl. It gives me java.lang.SecurityException and I think that's because the AT&T disabled this API. Without sign the appliaction, I can't use this application. But I don't want to pay verisign $500 to issue me their certificate. Is there a way to make it work? I am a J2ME developer and I want to test my j2me application on my nokia 6085 phone.

Traud is talking about the Series 40 SDK. There you can change the domain of the installed MIDlet.

In the emulator you can adjust the security settings very fine grained. I am not aware for a solution for a real phone. Especially for a AT&T one, you even might have no luck with VeriSign or thawte – do not understand that Wiki entry actually. Please read these two links carefully and I recommend to go through every link of this overview…
