Exclamation Do I need to sign my midlet? (Nokia N70)

    Hello experts,

I plan to use the following APIs on a Nokia N70:

    Code:
    JAD-File:

    MIDlet-Permissions: javax.microedition.io.Connector.http,
    javax.microedition.media.control.VideoControl.getSnapshot,
    javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.read,
    javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.write
What I want to avaid is a security prompt each time using one of the APIs. An "allow for session" prompt would be ok, because this is only a research application...

    • Is it sufficient to self-sign the midlet for a Nokia N70 mobile to get a "allow for session" option?
    • Do I need to buy a VeriSign certificate (which I couldn't effort as a student)?
    • Where can I get an overview of the different APIs, the different domains (untrusted, 3rd party, operator etc.), and the resulting security options for the user (ask every time, ask once, always allow etc.)?

I already spen't hours of researching, this is a really complicated topic ;-(

    Thank you for your help!

    Tim

    Hi mobile,

There's a doc at Forum Nokia that has plenty of information about security and signing. Check:

MIDP 2.0: Tutorial On Signed MIDlets v1.1
    http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.n..._1_en.pdf.html

Some S60 devices do allow using self-signed certs. I'm not sure about N70, though.

    hi juarezjunior,

thanks for this hint - I know this document already, unfortunately it does not answer my questions...

Do you maybe know a document listing all the devices which can be used with a self-signed certificate?

Who can maybe answer my question about the N70 and the different permissions?

    Thanks!

    Tim

    Hi Tim,
on Nokia N70 you could install your self created certificate. But this solution wouldn't work with much devices.
If you have installed your certificate on device and signed your midlet then most security level can be changed to 'allow always' excepting mutimedia (please let me know if you could set mutimedia to 'allow always').

    Hi fstifter,

thanks for your reply. That's good to know that N70 can be used with a self created certificate. I will let you know about the Multimedia options.

    To all Nokia guys:

    It would be really helpful

    - to have a list of all mobile devices supporting self created certificates

    - to have an overview of the different APIs, the different domains (untrusted, 3rd party, operator etc.), and the resulting security options for the user (ask every time, ask once, always allow etc.)

    Thanks,
    Tim

    I'll submit this as feedback.

    Thanks Ron.

Does anybody else have additional input which helps me?

Who has used the VideoControl.getSnapshot thing with a self signed certificate?

    Thanks,
    Tim
