hopefully a simple sms application question

Been reading through the documentation and forums here and I still can't get a good understanding of what to do. What I would like to do simply is to send an SMS (text based) to a Symbian application running on a handset, basically the SMS is to sync data with the local database. I want to make sure the user does not see the SMS. What I can gather is that there are two ways to do this:

    1. Have the handset application listen to a specific port and pull SMS's that way. If so, is this easy on the SMSC/SMPP side to send SMS's to a different port?

    2. Have the handset application parse all incoming SMS to see if it is application related. Will I have problems with these messages going to the inbox?

Am I correct that these are the two ways to do this? Is there something else I should be doing? Thanks in advance for the help.

Where is your data base? You can store data on your mobile handset itself to persist the data and which you can later use it.
