    Location Based API (newbie)

    Hi,

I'm new to location based programming. Basically, I need to get the location of the phone. but it doesn't have to be very accurate. Knowing which city the user in, is quit enough. or up to 5 KM in diameter accuracy.
Is there is a way for the phone to know this, assuming the phone is NOT equipped with a GPS? or Is there at least away for the phone to know (through Java/C++ API) the Cell id, and of course if I could get the longitude/latitude (even approximation) that will be awesome!

    Thanking You.

    Ahmed

May be you should give a try with Location API (JSR 179)
I have already posted some links to start developing with LAPI. Please check this link

    Re: Location Based API (newbie)

Thanks Gopal. I read through that document. However, I still wondering. It seems to me that phone cann't get any location data if it's not equipped with a GPS or use a network based service that is supported by the operator.
    I just wonder if:
    - the phone can get it's location data (longitude/latitude) without the need
for GPS or the use of network based service that require support from the
    operator?
    - at least if there is any API which can inquery and get the "Cell ID"?

    thanks

    Hi alqurri,

AFAIK For location based api, u require GPS or atleast support from the operator. Without these u will not be able to make a location api application.
You may search the C++ forum which may have more support than J2me

You could check the stuff at placelab.org. They are building an open source location database of CellIds
